(Song Review) Taylor Swift – “You Are In Love”

The queen of break up songs has turned the tables on her fans with a song that actually has a happy ending when it comes to love. The second bonus track on Taylor Swift‘s ‘1989 Deluxe Album’ is titled “You Are In Love” and it is simply breathtaking. The lyrics and intense emotion given from this song are enough to give anyone goosebumps. It is a simple, yet powerful song telling of a man and woman and the true love they share.

What makes this song even more special is that it was written based off of the love between two very special people to Taylor, Jack Antonoff (the co-writer to this song) and one of her best friends, Lena Dunham. Antonoff sent Taylor the track and she quickly put together the lyrics to express what these two people’s love looked like to her.

“The song “You Are In Love” is one that I did with Jack Antonoff and it’s strange because he sent me the track and I ended up writing these lyrics that very much mirrored what his relationship with his girlfriend and my best friend looked like to me. And the song is kind of told as if I’m looking at their story through a window or something.”

Once again, Taylor perfectly expresses the emotion of the lyrics through the music and captures what the feeling would sound like. The song starts off with a calm keyboard melody that has a lullaby-like sound to it. As the chorus starts up, drums and bass are added, but it keeps it’s steady rhythm. The lines to the chorus are perfect. “You can hear it in the silence. You can feel it on the way home. You can see it with the lights out. You are in love. True love. You are in love.”

Probably the most heart-melting lines in the song are during the second verse. “One night he wakes, strange look on his face. Pauses then says, ‘You’re my best friend’. And you knew what it was. He is in love.” As Taylor is singing those lines, the music dies down to add to the dramatic effect and then it picks up again at the chorus. Another beautiful moment is during the bridge when Taylor sings, “And you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars. And why I spent my whole life trying to put it into words…” This last line is the only line that reflects off of her instead of the two she is singing about. She’s spent her entire life singing about the love she felt in her relationships and she’s saying that now these two can understand how hard it is to put true love into words. The bridge ends and then she goes back into the chorus only with very little music. Leaving just the beautiful words and your emotions.

It’s understandable why this song didn’t make it into the original album track list. “1989” is about her journey of finding herself over the past couple years and of not having any relationship to get in her way. This song just doesn’t really fit into that.

“This album is not heavily based on romance or love because that hasn’t been a huge part of my life and watching my friends fall in love and find meaningful relationships has been one of the most moving experiences. So this song is all about what it’s like when you really do find real love. We’re not talking like the chase, we’re not talking about a phase you go through, or a fling. This is what it’s like when you find real, true love and um, to me, this song is how that feeling sounds.”

We can only hope that someday Taylor will find true love. Then we will start getting albums filled with beautiful songs like these.
