NIKI “Did You Like Her In The Morning” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review
The song is talking about the eternal conflict of insecurity among a couple about their past relationships. Everybody has an ex-relationship story and some relationships cannot handle this truth. In the song, the singer wonders about her lover’s past relationship imagining how they used to wake up next to another girl not so long ago.
Did he enjoy waking up next to her than he does now waking up next to the singer? When he drew the curtains of the bedroom when he was with his ex, did he like the view better then?
Did you laugh over cold cups of coffee
Cold cups of coffee represent how stale their relationship had gotten before they broke up. Neither of them had the energy to make the effort to brew a fresh coffee in the morning. He laughed and drank it while hating it from within.
The singer cannot help but wreck her brain thinking about all the past experiences of her current lover. It might be easier not knowing all the details. But right now, not knowing is killing her. She wishes she didn’t know who his ex was and she feels insecure.
In the second verse of the song, NIKI wanders further into madness. She starts comparing herself to his ex. Was it much better with her? Was her touch heavenly? Did she feel like a feather in his sweater? And does she look and feel the opposite?
‘Cause I don’t know if I can compete
With the former crowned head of your old Ford’s front seat
Everything he does with the singer now, she cannot help but picture the same scenarios with his ex-girlfriend. Whenever he catches NIKI while she is being sloppy, she can only imagine how he did the same with his ex. And maybe her waist felt a little tinier than hers?! When he kisses the singer goodnight, she pictures the same happening with his ex. Maybe, he liked the kiss with his ex better. This is an endless struggle having to compare yourself to someone from the past.
In the singer’s mind, she would never live up to her partner’s ex. But what she needs to understand is that something didn’t work out between them and that’s why they are no longer together. At least he is with her right now. Whatever the future holds does not matter right now. Enjoy while you can.
