Tate McRae – It’s ok I’m ok | Lyrics Meaning Revealed

Canadian popstar Tate McRae is back with new music and controversy with her latest single “It’s ok I’m ok.” The song talks about the singer coming of age and being okay with who she has become and what she has accomplished.

“It’s ok I’m ok” is the first listen from Tate McRae’s upcoming third studio album. The song came to life out of a conversation the singer was having in a moment of downtime;

“Honestly, I wrote it last year in Sweden with ILYA and Savan and, um, it honestly started off from like a conversation of me being like, ‘Oh, it’s okay, I’m okay,’ more like, ‘That would be a crazy song,’ so, I ended up finishing it like four weeks ago and turned it in to a fun pop song, made the music video and I am very, very excited for it to come out. […] We wrote the entire song in, like—, obviously a year later, I’m a different person in different relationships. I’m twenty-one now, I feel like I have different perspectives so the whole song kind of shifted for me and I saw it in a brand new life that I didn’t before.”

The music video for “It’s ok I’m ok” received some backlash due to the inclusion of nudity in it. Tate McRae, in full frontal nudity (strategically blurred), gets arrested by some police officers in the video. Some people were not a fan of this ‘unnecessary’ addition of nudity, whereas others praised the singer for her artistic expression.

Tate McRae “It’s ok I’m ok” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

The song tells the story of a girl who found out that her ex-boyfriend just started dating one of her friends. Her friend is over the moon as he is a ‘smooth talker,’ ‘good with money,’ and has a good relationship with his mother. Her friend can only see him as ‘perfect’ right now with all the butterflies in her stomach.

Tate McRae can’t even be jealous. She was in the same position her friend was some months back. She had the same butterflies and dreams. He was a bit too good to be true, but everything was perfect then.

No, nothin’ could make me miss it
Take him, he’s yours

Tate McRae has no problem moving on. This tells us there is a side to this boy that we don’t see yet. Beneath his perfection is something that chased Tate away for good.

Some months into the relationship, Tate realizes that he is not the man he pretends to be. Unfortunately, we get no explanation why. But demons rise up in relationships all the time. The more you get to know a person, the more secrets you uncover. And some secrets you might be able to forgive and forget, and some you may not be able to.

Whatever demons he has hidden that Tate uncovered has her saying ‘good luck’ to his new girlfriend. Haven’t we all been there?
