twenty one pilots “The Contract” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

“The Contract” dives into the mind of the protagonist hiding for his survival–AKA Clancy.

I check the doors, check the windows and pull the blinds

What is he hiding from? A necromancer. Necromancy, the dark art of dealing with the dead, is a popular element in the Dema universe. Necromancers are often found in allegiance of the Bishops of Dema–who are the rulers of the city.

In the hook of the song, we find that Clancy is sleep deprived by his own accord. He keeps himself up because he fears things that could unfold when his eyes shut. Sleep deprivation is a common theme in the songs of the Dema discography.

Ooh, promises and contracts I used to keep

A contract is a binding statement between two or more parties. Clancy is wary of being lied to and getting handed the short end of the deal. He can’t give anymore. Look where all the contracts have lead him to–nowhere. No more!

In the only verse of the song, we find the protagonist pacing in his room, door locked, window blinds drawn, and wondering when the Sun comes out.

Better try to brеathe, pace around, pace around

In over his head, Clancy paces up and down wondering what his life has come to. His time is marked. Every moment he paces in his room, awake, and tired, he loses more and more–his will, his chances of survival, and his freedom!

The bridge of the song concludes his dilemma;

I wanna get out there (Ooh-ooh)
But I don’t try (Ooh-ooh)

He wants to chase his freedom. But he is too scared of the ‘what ifs.’ So he paces in his room contemplating alternatives and failures.
