If you are a 90’s kid, there is little to no chance that you have not heard this song or watched this TV show. ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’ story wove around the lives of 6 best friends of ages 20 to 30, living in Manhattan and going through their everyday lives, making ‘adult’ decisions. Needless to say, this bunch has a very different way of facing the world.

‘FRIENDS’ theme song “I’ll Be There For You,” too, captures this essence of the TV show. The lyrics were written by the ‘FRIENDS’ creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, and performed by the America Pop-rock duo The Rembrandts.

The song “I’ll Be There For You” has become an anthem of friendship ever since. The song speaks about the hardships of adult life and how having friends to support each other along the way, really makes life that much easier.

The Rembrandts later released the theme song as a single from their 1995 album ‘L.P.’

Storyline:

The ‘FRIENDS’ sitcom ran from 1994 to 2004 for successful 10 seasons and has gained an IMDb rating of 8.9 over 10 and is still loved today.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “I’ll Be There For You”

Verse 1

The very first verse of “I’ll Be There For You” slaps some harsh realities into our faces. Most teens in their 20s will be able to relate to this.

No education we have received from anywhere will prepare anybody for the struggles of the adult life. And add a ‘joke’ of a job and being broke all the time on top of that and you have a typical teenager. And don’t even start about the love life. The song says the love life is ‘dead on arrival,’ which roughly means that you have never experienced a true love.

All of this feels like your life is moving uphill on second gear. Sometimes, this would go on for days, months or even years. It is just life and its nature.

Chorus

We would like to say that the chorus of “I’ll Be There For You” is catchy, but that would be an understatement for the rest of the verses.

The chorus says no matter how hard the life gets the singer will be there for the other. Even the hardships continue for days, months or years, they will always look after one another. Why? Because they have been there for him in need as well.

Friendship is a cycle. It relies on trust and give-and-take.

More hardships of adult life unfold…

Work started and 8 and this person is still asleep at 10. This is very common among the teens who cram every day and night at work. In the rush of the morning, you get your breakfast burnt. But other than the fact that you are two hours late to work and is still at home preparing breakfast, again, things are going great (*sarcasm*).

The singer says their mother warned about tough days in life, but she left out that some days the world just breaks you down and brings you to your knees. You just have to get up, smile and get on with it.

Several solid lyrics about what being true friends mean. They know each other the best, They understand each other the best, and best of all, they know what it’s like to be the other.

Friends are there to make your life easier. Someone to help you get back up when life chews you up and spits you out. Even when you are chewed up spit, your friend will be the one to help you up.
