Ariana Grande released her fifth studio album ‘thank u, next’ within no time of releasing her fourth studio album ‘Sweetener’ in 2018. The reduction in time gap was caused by a rollercoaster of emotions spun from the personal turmoils of her dating life throughout 2018. The second track of the new album titled “needy” is dedicated to the feeling of being needed in a relationsip-something quite frowned upon in post-modern society.
The new album ‘thank u, next’ dropped after two massive singles and music videos. The first single “thank u, next” was the break up anthem of 2018, which was inspired by the two relationships–Mac Miller and Pete Davidson–that went south during last year for Ariana. The music video for this track was one of the fastest to reach 100 million views on YouTube. The next single was titled “7 Rings” and took a whole different spin from the first song. It was based on friendship and flaunting Ariana’s massive wealth. A third single “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” was released with a music video on the same day the album dropped, on February 8, 2019.
The song “needy” was first teased in a 45-second snippet posted on Instagram by Ariana Grande. Later, in “thank u, next” music video, Ariana was seen wearing a t-shirt with the song titled ‘needy.’

In “needy” we hear Ariana Grande singing about the rollercoaster of a life she has had recently. Talking about the album, Ari said that she wrote this album within what she would call the ‘worst 3 weeks of her life.’ So we can imagine her talking about the emotional impact of breaking up with the love of her life-Mac Miller and getting engaged to Pete Davidson and then calling it off and also having to endure the overdose of Mac Miller after their break up. One can only imagine the thoughts that bubbled within her which were turned to lyrics later on.
“needy” puts a spin on the post-modern social idea that one should be free and independent in a relationship. Being ‘needy’ is frowned upon now. But Ariana sings that it is okay to feel needed, and it is okay to want attention and care.
In the pre-chorus of the song, Ariana says that it is okay to be vulnerable and it is okay to show emotions with one another. One of the biggest mistakes in relationships is pretending not to need each other. Everybody loves to be needed. Let your significant other feel that way every once in a while.
