Billie Eilish – listen before i go (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“listen before i go” is the 12th track on the brand new debut album ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’ by Billie Eilish released on March 29, 2019.

The song speaks about suicide, as Billie has confirmed during a live tour;

“Basically it’s like, um it’s about, it’s just about depression, and what can come out of depression, which is not pretty good. When this comes out, I don’t want it to break you down, I want it to bring you to me and I don’t know, be like a mental hug, I guess. What I’m really trying to do is let my words be your words and stay ours.”

The final three songs on the standard album tracklist forms a message; (12) listen before i go, (13) i love you, and (14) goodbye, as if she is taking her curtain calls in the album itself.

In the lyrics to this song, Billie Eilish sounds very adament about her decision to end her life. She prefers to see the world from a rooftop for once last time before she takes the plunge.

The motive behind her decision to take her life seems to be based on heartbreak. “Sorry” is a word that has lost all power according to Billie. She sounds to have lost all faith in love. And the only way out of this pain she is going through, is the plunge down.

Suicide is a scary thought and an experience and should not be encouraged at all. Anyone suffering from suicidal thoughts should be treated accordingly. The best cure is love. In the second verse, Billie explains the continuous pain she went through that pushed her towards this decision. Maybe more than once she has been torn apart in love. She used to have hope about the next one. But, déja vu!!!
