Billie Eilish – my strange addiction (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“my strange addiction” is the 9th track on the brand new debut album ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’ by Billie Eilish released on March 29, 2019.

Not so strangely enough, this track contans many dialogues from the popular TV series The Office. The intro, 2 interludes and the outro to “my strange addiction” are from The Office dialogues.

However, the rest of the lyrics to the song speak about ‘love’ which is termed as ‘strange’ in the song. Billie Eilish, age 17, has actively expressed her ‘yucky’ feelings for love in real life. Hence, this song comes fully written and produced by her brother FINNEAS.

“my strange addiction” follows the theme of a girl being in love and not realizing it. She feels differently inside and she cannot explain what it is. The only change she had endured recently is meeting this new boy. “Addiction” word has been overly used to describe addiction to drugs in modern days. So Billie also brings in a reference to “belladonna” which is another name for the ‘nightshade’ plant which is used to make drugs. An ‘Oxford comma‘ is one which you add before the final “and” in a series.

The relationship Billie is developing with this boy seems to be toxic, much like taking in a drug. She has suffered before, which makes her think she needs a break, but this boy has got her feeling all strange feelings inside her, and she cannot deny.

In the pre-chorus, Billie explains one reason why they cannot work in the long run. She is the gunpowder and he is the fuse, and ‘friction’ between them sets off the spark. And it’s fireworks after the spark–and not the good kind of fireworks either.

In the second verse, Billie explains how she is a sucker for this toxic relationship. Their relationship burns like a dry gin on her throat; and his touches borderline pain and pleasure, and this has Billie craving for more. She is hurt, but she is willing to hide it and continue!
