The lyrics to “Broken” by Bon Jovi narrates the story of all veterans. These heroes are born to serve. These men are deployed into places on Earth they have never heard of before in their lives, and they are commanded to fight a war that they had no part from the beginning. But, they know no words beyond “Sir, yes, sir!” So they fight on. On and on.

When you are straight out of the boot camp, your morale is high. The soldiers will fight hungrily. They will see things that no other men have ever seen. These are sure to scar them up on the inside. Bon Jovi says that when the soldier is 19 years old it is not that difficult to fall asleep at night. But when he grows to be 50, the memories from the battlefield will surely keep him up at night. These, in turn, lead to intensifying illnesses such as PTSD.

The chorus of the song is a plea to God. Bon Jovi speaks on behalf of the veterans when he prays that no one deserves to have a life of a suffering veteran. He wishes that these veterans can be ‘unbroken.’ But it seems like a far fetched dream.

In the fourth verse of “Unbroken,” Bon Jovi drops some gruesome facts about the veterans. According to the lyrics and the stats on the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation webpage, every day 22 veterans commit suicide. The main cause for this has been identified as PTSD. Regardless of how high that number is, it is a very unfortunate situation that the people who sacrificed their lives to serve and protect all of us meet up with an eerie end like suicide.

Jon Bon Jovi being the son of two former Marines of the United States Army is the perfect candidate to voice these opinions.
