Billie Eilish – Birds Of A Feather | Lyrics Meaning Explained

“Birds of a Feather” is the fourth track on Billie Eilish’s brand new album ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft.’ The song talks about a love that lasts forever. Despite the worst odds in any relationship, true love can persevere, and the ones that last will look beautiful in hindsight.

Billie Eilish released her third studio album ‘HIT ME HARD & SOFT’ on May 17, 2024. The album has been in the works for a few years since ‘Happier Than Ever’ album release in 2021. As per Billie, the title of the album is literal–“hits you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically, while bending genres and defying trends along the way.” The album had no singles before its release as Billie wanted her fans to experience it all at once.

The phrase “birds of a feather, flock together” often talks about long-lasting connections. It means that people of similar traits/qualities do tend to stick together. In the context of the song, Billie Eilish implies that she and her lover have much in common that makes her believe it is possible for them to spend a lifetime together.

Billie Eilish “Birds of a Feather” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

The first verse of the song gets as dark as it could be. Billie Eilish talks about loving her partner until death–in multiple ways. She invites her partner to stay with her until they are dead and buried, until their last breath, and until they are in a casket being carried away. Because life without her significant other would be useless and she does not want to imagine such a world.

If so it happens that her partner dies before her, she might just turn blue and fade away as well. The color blue is often associated with sadness, depression, and lack of drive. It could also hint at the color the body turns when the blood supply is cut off. Either way, the lyrics hint at an ‘end’ for Billie now that her partner is gone.

Nothin’ left to lose without my baby

In the refrain of the song, Billie Eilish admits that the weather can get rough in a relationship, especially looking at the long run. Some things are just out of everyone’s control. It takes an extra effort and a special understanding between the two people to get through these rough times. Billie Eilish only hopes for the best and a forever story for them.

In the second verse of the song, we hear a slightly different perspective from the singer. Billie Eilish has no doubts about the love that she experiences with her partner. But her partner is not so sure about their worthiness of being loved. They hoard all the compliments the singer throws at them because they don’t feel confident enough to return the favor. Billie snaps back at them assuring that there is no need to overthink this. They obviously love each other and that’s that.

I don’t think I could love you more

Billie Eilish has very strong feelings about her partner in this song. So much so that she believes her partner might be someone she knew from a past life. This is the sort of connection that one feels beyond comprehension. This is the kind of understanding that feels impossible to have been built in a few years. Billie Eilish keeps reassuring her partner that what they feel is nothing fabricated. Sometimes it can feel too good to be true. But this time, she believes, it is just too good, period!

If they are cut from the same cloth, they will last a lifetime–‘birds of a feather, flock together!’
