“Normal” is the ninth track on BTS’s 2026 album ‘ARIRANG.’ On the track, the band explores the effects of fame they faced since their meteoric rise. Fame doesn’t always bring fruit and flowers. Sometimes, it brings you down.
‘ARIRANG’ is the fifth studio album by the K-Pop sensation BTS. The long-awaited album comes four years after the release of their anthology album ‘Proof’ (2022).’ ‘Arirang’ is a reference to a traditional Korean folk song renowned worldwide. The album artwork, which features the BTS members in front of a darkened background, is a nod to a group of seven Korean students from the 19th Century who are credited with the earliest known recording of “Arirang.” The album contains 15 tracks and was released on March 20, 2026.
In “Normal,” BTS compares the effects of fame to those of kerosene and dopamine – the former an ignition aid and the latter a hormone chemical boosting mood. The artists talk about both the love and hate that they receive from fans and haters alike. They need to have thick skin to be able to survive the battle of fame in this day and age.

What is the meaning of the song “Normal” by BTS?
At the beginning of the song, the singers compare the perks and pitfalls of fame to kerosene and dopamine. Kerosene can be likened to something destructive – burning everything it touches. Dopamine, on the other hand, is a sudden rush of emotions, oftentimes happiness, created by neurons in our brain. This shows us both the good and the bad of being famous around the world – it is bound to attract both love and hate.
Show me hate, show me love, make me bulletproof
No matter how good or talented a band is, there is bound to be some hate coming from somewhere – especially in this digital age. Every good thing gets broadcasted and every bad thing goes viral. One needs to develop very thick skin to weather the Internet community.
Wish I had a minute just to turn me off
It can be exhausting to have your work exposed to the world around the clock. The world does not sleep, and the band gets no rest. Unless you are enlisted in mandatory military training, the band is supposed to release music, go on tours, do interviews, make public appearances, and more. There seems to be no downtime.
In the first verse of the song, Jinmin talks about how celebrities are perceived by the commoners.
Heavy is the head when you chasin’ true
Is there any authenticity left in this world of social media anymore? Does anyone portray their true selves on the Internet? Jinmin flips the old phrase ‘heavy is the head that wears the crown’ to fit his narrative. A crown brings power. ‘Chasing true’ is being true to yourself. It seems as if the public is always divided about an artist – BTS is no exception. It’s either black or white, or red or blue. But life is much more colors than just two. Is the public ever going to paint them in multi-colors? Guess not.
In the second verse of the song, BTS sings about developing a heart of steel. Are they even allowed to have their own emotions anymore? Or does everything have to be a performance for the public? How can they be authentic when every narrative gets forced on them?
If everything’s just happy, mm, that ain’t real (That ain’t real)
There cannot be happiness without sadness or pain without pleasure or fame without shame. The absence of one also means the loss of meaning of its opposite. BTS says not one of them can be happy all the time. They each have their good days and bad days, just like everyone else. However, when your image and voice are broadcast around the world every hour of the day, the propensity to attract both love and hate gets amplified.
One deep sigh, then it slips away, fades away
BTS lays out some surprisingly true facts about life – how everything is merely a fleeting moment and nothing more. The present is an illusion – we only live in a tiny fraction of time between the past and the future. Every second you worry about something, it already slips in to the past. Take a deep breath – exhale -, and it might have shockingly positive results. For a group as big as BTS, the exposure they have to the world can be quite daring most of the time. They understand that they cannot control the Internet – they can only look at it, inhale and exhale, and move on.
“Normal” by BTS is an attempt to show us the vulnerabilities the band faces despite being one of the most popular bands in the world. They understand that good comes packaged with the bad, and they just have to learn to let some things go rather than hold on to them.
