The Chainsmokers – The One (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“The One” is a different composition of music than what you have been used to by The Chainsmokers-this is a ballad-so that makes it that much more special. And to intensify things further, there are no featured vocalists on the song-just Andrew Taggart. “The One” is the first single released from The Chainsmoker’s debut album ‘Memories… Do Not Open’ which is due to be released on April 7th.

Releasing the new single, the EDM duo posted on Instagram;

We put out the first song on our album today. It’s called “the one”. It’s a ballad, which is new for us, but this album is about growth, both personally and musically. I wrote the first verse of this song on a plane when I was feeling guilty about being so wrapped up in my work, knowing that it was affecting my relationships. I figured if I wrote a song about it, it would remind me to seek balance. So, here it is. Shout out to the dream team @emilywarrennnn @scottharris123 for helping us tell this story ❤️

This song might represent one of the very rare instances where a ballad gets remixed with electro/dance music. So we do know that The Chainsmokers are trying new things with their music and that is probably what keeps them ahead.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “The One”

Verse 1

You know, I’m sorry
I won’t make it to your party
Got caught up in my own selfishness
It won’t let me be a part of this
And I know I’ve started
Drifting off every second
I can’t wait to leave as soon as I arrive
I count the seconds

Andrew Taggart mentioned that this song was about self growth having had to miss out on life and relationships being busy with his work. The first verse mentions how he missed out on important events of his life-maybe not due to unavoidable circumstances. Because “The One” does say he missed out on them because of his ‘own selfishness.’

Chorus

Down and down we go
We’ll torch this place we know
Before one of us takes a chance
And breaks this, I won’t be the one
No, I won’t be the one

The singer is addressing about his relationships in the chorus of “The One.” He says the relationship is headed down a spiral. He says he would try to make it a better situation for the both of them because he is not willing to give up on the relationship. Before one of them tips the point of no return, he would make an effort to be there more.

Verse 2

I know it’s pathetic
F*ck it, yeah, I said it
Tried to tell it like it is
There’s a chance that I’ll regret it, so
Let’s go, let’s end this
I delete before I send it
And we can play pretend
Like we haven’t reached the end yet

The relationship is at a worse position than what “The One” lead us to believe in the first verse. The singer speaks aloud the text he has typed in waiting to hit send. He has typed in “let’s end this” and he deletes it before he sends it and regrets it. Andrew Taggart says the relationship has already reached the tipping point, but they keep on playing ‘pretend.’ So there never will be any comfort or satisfaction in the relationship for either of them.

“The One” ends in a sadder tune where the singer cries out loud that he is sorry that the relationship has come to this and he also says that he won’t end it. So I guess they will keep pushing it a bit further until they get sick of each other.

Anyway “The One” is a different tune and melody to what we have been used to from The Chainsmokers. It’s a nice change and either you love it or hate it.
