Halsey – Without Me (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

Halsey has broken the silence with her newest single “Without Me” after the ‘hopeless fountain kingdom’ album release in 2017. Halsey’s name was out in the public eye recently with G-Eazy and Machine Gun Kelly feuding with each other. G-Eazy is Halsey’s ex-boyfriend who called it quits to their 1-year-old relationship in July 2018. Since then, Halsey has kept out of public eye and “Without Me” is her outcry.

In an interview with Zane Lowe, Halsey spoke about this new song. She confirmed that this song will not be a part of an album as she wants it to stand on its own. She also confirmed that there will be a music video coming out for the song, but it is not going to be anything flashy. Halsey also mentions that “Without Me” is her first songwriting as Ashley. Halsey’s real name Ashley Nicolette Frangipane. ‘Halsey’ is a spin on the letters used in ‘Ashley.’

The song speaks about the life after a relationship coming to an end. The singer reminisces back to all the times she nurtured the relationship and how it was so easy for him to walk out of it and do so well afterwards.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Without Me”

Verse 1

The first verse talks about how Halsey too her ex-lover under her wings when he was battered and broken from love. She gave him all he needed and more to recover, the cup of love overflow. She took extra care of him and treated him special going out of her way. She would keep him under her wings until he recovered.

Pre-chorus

She nurtured him until he was fully healed-until he could walk again. But walk he did, out of her life. Halsey also says that she ignored everything others said about their relationship because she believed in it. She said ‘adios!’ to anyone who did not believe in them or said he was not right for you. Now she feels ashamed that she did not listen to them.

Chorus

These lyrics of “Without Me” by Halsey describes the current situation between her and her ex-lover. She lifted him to such heights now he is too far up in the sky to reach down for her. She nurtured him to health only for him to soar the skies while she is left on the ground.

Halsey asks her ex-lover if he remembers that she is the one who fixed his wings when he was broken. It just hurts her how easily he took flight once he was healed. Now Halsey is questioning her life choices; why she thought he would give anything back to this relationship.

Verse 2

She tried to make him realize her affection for him, over and over again. But he was soaring too far up in the sky for him to hear her cries. She even took in his demons for him to be free. She took up the burdens so he could fly. But she was too high in love to realize that she was not getting the same treatment back. When she did realize it, it was too late.

Bridge

This bit of lyrics interpolates Justin Timberlake’s 2002 hit “Cry Me A River.” As Halsey Tweeted out, it is not a direct sample off of JT’s track. She uses some lyrics and fits into the theme of “Without Me.” The reason for this sample being, both songs having a similar vibe, as per Halsey.
