21 Savage – asmr (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“asmr” is the 9th track on 21 Savage’s 2018 album ‘

‘ASMR’ stands for ‘autonomous sensory meridian response,’ a phrase popularized by some YouTube channels. ‘ASMR’ describes the soothing feeling or sensation experienced by listening to very subtle, rhythmic and quiet sounds. Examples of these sounds are whispering, a mouse click, a stick breaking, footsteps on gravel, tires on gravel, water bubbles and so on. In this song, 21 Savage resorts to a whispering rap verse to abide the laws of ASMR.

The lyrics to the song are written by Kid Hazel, Metro Boomin and 21 Savage, while the production is done by the former two.

“asmr” managed to stirr up some controversy due to one lyric line, for which 21 publicly apologized later on.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “asmr”

Verse 1

In the entirety of the first verse of “asmr,” 21 speaks about his affiliations with gangs and use of guns. 21 just does not use his guns, but he also knows about the background of his guns. He spells out that his AK47 is made in Russia, which is factually accurate.

21 also talks about how fearless his team and he is. They don’t do drive by’s. A drive-by is when you shoot at a target from inside a moving vehicle, so that escaping is almost entirely effortless. 21 sees this as cowardly. They straight up walk to the fight.

These wars have a toll on 21 as well. He talks about how he sees dead bodies walking, and how he has felt and dealt pain from both sides of the gun. The grip end of the gun can deal heavy damage on a skull as well. His hallucinations of dead bodies could be a result of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which he admits to having in a latter verse.

The singer also gives a shout out to his hometown-Georgia, referencing it as the ‘South.’

Verse 2

One lyric on the second verse of “asmr” stirred some controversy.

We been gettin’ that Jewish money, everything is Kosher (On God)

This line received some backlash from different communities as interpreted as a stereotypical offense. However, 21 was quick to respond;

21 goes on to sing about his love for the luxury cars. Lamborghini Aventador for himself and Lambo Roadster for his wife-Amber Rose.

21 continues to rap about his loyalty for his crew. He says that he will stay 21 for life and he will never snitch on his brothers. Eventhough money and fame has got him brand new Adidas, he will always value his ‘stripes’ he got from the streets. ‘Stripes’ are commonly identified as street-cred in slang.

Outro

The outro of this song follows ‘ASMR’ rules. 21 Savage reduces his vocals to a whisper as he lays some heartbreaking news about his brother who got shot. He speaks about his brother and his dead best friend on “a lot” from ‘i am > i was’ album as well.
