May 3rd ushers a new era for Shawn Mendes and his fans, as the 20-year-old Canadian pop star released a brand new single “If I Can’t Have You” from his untitled 4th studio album.
The “Lost In Japan” singer released this brand new single today calling it a “pop” song confidently. However, we hear more of a Bop genius underneath the beats. The crooner announced the upcoming single just a day prior to the release of the song. However, the new single and music video premiered on YouTube and Shawn Mendes joined in for a live chat with the fans on YouTube.
In this YouTube live chat, Shawn Mendes talked about The 1975 band being the “biggest inspiration” for this song. Shawn did specifically mention that this song is not the start of a new album, but we assume that should there be a new album at some point, this song would be a part of it. He also urged the fans not to guess whom this song is about!
“If I Can’t Have You” is an obvious love song. But it sounds a little bit late for Shawn to claim this love. In the chorus of the song, he sings “Is it too late to tell you that,” so we know he messed up.

In the lyrics to this song, we find out that Shawn Mendes was deeply in love with this girl, but he might have shied away from making a move because he is “good at keeping my distance.”
In the verses, the singer talks about how he would not be satisfied with just a friendship or a mere fling. He wants all of her and forever. And he is ready to accept all the strings that comes attached with a relationship.
Shawn Mendes hints that the subject girl might have moved onto another relationship; hence the question “is it too late” for him to pop the question. If it is too late for him, he might not move on from her ever again as long as they keep on talking to each other. However, if they are still keeping in touch, Shawn might actually have a chance!
If Shawn Mendes wants to pursue this love, he better step up his game. Stuck in Toronto and writing songs about her would help little!
