Joyner Lucas – ISIS Ft. Logic (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“ISIS” is the third single off of Joyner Lucas’ upcoming second studio album ‘ADHD.’ The song was released on May 23, 2019, after the first two singles “I Love” and “Devil’s Work.”

“ISIS” is an abbreviation to the ‘Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’ terrorist group, which Joyner name drops once in the lyrics. That is also in reference to a kidnap, which is a very mild portrayal of the terrorist group’s actual destructive force.

The song goes on to talk about the condition of ‘Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder’ or commonly known as ADHD, which causes the patient to act impatient, unfocused and irrational. The singer might be using this condition as a metaphor to justify his ‘psychotic’ lyrics on this track.

This song marks an important milestone in both artists’ careers as they have seemed to call off their beef which started in 2017. Logic seemingly addresses this same situation in his verse on this track. In his lyrics, Logic identifies their beef as something that never mattered in the first place.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “ISIS”

In Joyner Lucas’ lyrics of the song, he covers a wide range of topics such as ADHD, ISIS, women of his past, and his success in the rap game.

Joyner talks about how he recalls of a time he was sleeping on his dad’s couch and now he drives a Bentley. The success of his recent music, has crowned him the ‘cash cow’ of the family. ‘Cash cow’ is a marketing term which signifies a market with immense profit opportunities.

He also tells us that he has let go of a few grudges he used to hold. Maybe the beef with Logic is one of them. Joyner identifies holding grudges as living in a cave–dark and gloomy. It is a place with no mental health. So these pity grudges need to be let go of.

Joyner Lucas also lovingly remembers his high school teachers who told him that he will never amount to anything in life. However, Joyner Lucas is a well-known name in rap and boasts a net worth of $1 million as of 2019.

Chorus

In the chorus of “ISIS,” Joyner shouts out to all his haters–from people who prays for his fall, his competition, women who broke his heart, completely bad days, and finally for the kids of his same calibre who are cornered by society.

Logic raps about dropping the beef with Joyner Lucas which spurred in 2017. The beef spurred after Joyner called out Logic on his “Mask On” remix, and Logic responded with “Yuck” in 2018. However, in these verses, Logic assures that both of their peace of mind is more important than continuing this petty beef.

Logic also name drops John Wick, a fictional character played by Keanu Reeves in the movie ‘John Wick.’ Keanu Reeves plays the role of a moral and ruthless killer seeking justice in the movie. Being a massive fan, Logic released a stand-alone song titled “Keanu Reeves” in January 2019.
