“Things Get Worse” is a feature on rapper B.O.B.’s 2011 track from his album ‘E.P.I.C.’ However, this new leak is a much older original by Eminem allegedly done for his 2009 album ‘Relapse.’ This original version was reworked for the feature with B.O.B.
A snippet of Eminem’s original version of “Things Get Worse” surfaced online on November 4, 2019. After a week, the full version has leaked online. This the second leak related to Eminem in this month, the first being “What If I Was Gay” a collaboration with Joyner Lucas.
The song made some heads turn due to Eminem talking about Chris Brown and Rihanna’s domestic violence cases from 2009. In the song, Eminem is heard siding with Chris Brown.
Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Things Get Worse”
The lyrics to the chorus of the song roll out in the form of a conversation Eminem having with himself-more accurately, with his much notorious personality, Slim Shady. He talks to himself how constantly he has warned his Slim Shady alter ego to be careful. But he does not listen to himself. Marshall Mathers is one personality, Eminem is another personality and Slim Shady is yet another personality. And the latter knows no limits when it comes to verses.
The best example is Eminem’s 1999 album ‘The Slim Shady LP.’ The 20-track album is generous with many a diss to anyone and everyone that comes to his mind in the songwriting process. To point out how bad things got with the album, Eminem’s own mother, Deborah Nelson, filed a lawsuit against Eminem for slander on the track “My Name Is.”
In the chorus of “Things Get Worse,” even Eminem raps that he is disgusted with himself. So he knows that things will get much worse before they get better.
There on, Eminem goes on to drop some wicked lines as if he has no control over himself. He warned himself in the chorus, but its as if he has Tourettes syndrome.
Eminem namedrops popular celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Jessica Simpson, Carmen Elektra, Rihanna, Natasha Bedingfield and Dakota Fanning, who become subject to his verbal, and often sexual in nature, abuse. The more controversial lines appear in the second verse when Eminem gives his two cents on the Rihanna and Chris Brown domestic abuse story. Em seems to side with Chris Brown and confess that he might beat down the woman, too, had she given him sexually transmitted diseases. In 2014, Eminem and Rihanna performed on ‘The Monster Tour’ together.
From the latter part of the first verse of “Things Get Worse,” Eminem talks about Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, was an American serial killer and sex offender who committed the rape, murder, and dismemberment of 17 men and boys from 1978 to 1991 (source: Wikipedia). His fascination with male victims for sexual assault makes Eminem build on it by saying he is going to get the ‘rectal thermometer’ and some lube for what is coming next.
