Verse 1

The song is a self-reflection. Alec Benjamin assumes to be his older self in these lyrics and looks back at his life. The only memory of his old self is the pictures on his shelves. From there to now, it is a blank. He feels empty inside and feels worthless.

He had very high dreams for himself–“reach for the moon” he said to himself. But now he realizes that he is not even halfway there yet. And he has very little time and energy to pursue these goals.

Pre-chorus

Looking back at his life, the singer realizes that he has not achieved what he set out to. The music video shows an elderly person contemplating his life. He has very little energy left to pursue his teenage goals. It is a scary vision!

Chorus

This older self of Alec Benjamin wonders where time flew! He has no clue as to what he did or who he was even a year back. We get stuck in the rut of life and often end up throwing our goals and dreams away to make way for ‘survival.’ It is a sad reality.

When Alec looks at the mirror he remembers his young self from way back. He wonders where the energy, time, goals and dreams flew away.

Verse 2

In the second verse of “Oh My God,” Alec might be talking about his relationships that he sacrificed along the way. He threw away what he thought were ‘obstacles’ in his path in this marathon of life. But now, 50 years later, he realizes that he may have been foolish and naive to do so. He feels empty in his life achievements and he feels empty in his relationships. He realizes that it was not worth it to lose his loved ones in this race of life.

Hidden behind the angelic voice of Alec Benjamin, these lyrics of “Oh My God,” sing of a scary reality in modern society. What are your thoughts on this song and its meaning? Drop a comment below.
