joji like you do

Joji – Like You Do | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

“Like You Do” is the seventeenth track on Joji’s 2020 album ‘Nectar.’ The song is a sullen lullaby on his relationship and his doubts on its future.

Joji released his second studio album ‘Nectar’ on September 25, 2020. The album got postponed from its original release date of July 2020 due to Covid-19. This is his return to music after the 2018 album ‘BALLADS 1.’

In the song, Joji appreciates that he has this girl in his life, but he is scared about everything falling apart. Just as his track “Ew” suggests, Joji is always expecting the worse in relationships, likely through his experiences in the past.

“Like You Do” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

Verse 1

On the very first verse itself, Joji says that he is expecting this relationship to take a southward road–meaning towards an ending. He absolutely does not want to mess up the good relationship that they have going on. But he also feels as if they are aiming at a moving target–almost aimless. They can only expect the ending to be painless, which is a far cry from reality, always.

Pre-chorus

It is a known fact that our emotions affect the way we perceive our world around us. So, a song that brought you happy memories while in love may bring entirely the opposite feeling when you fall out of love. So, Joji knows that he is going to hear this lullaby in a very different tone when the inevitable happens.

Chorus

In the chorus of the song, Joji admits to all the butterflies and the good feelings he goes through when he is with his lover. He knows that “you’re the one I can’t lose,” but if his past is any indication, he will lose.

Verse 2

In the second verse of “Like You Do,” Joji reveals how his life was changed for the better with this girl in his life. So he would hate to lose this feeling in his life. So he would do everything in his power to protect the girl and these feelings forever. But he has not yet defeated that flicker of doubt in the back of his mind about the longevity of this relationship. It would feel quite horrible to labor these thoughts.
