Shawn Mendes – 305 | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

“305” or “3:05” is the tenth track on Shawn Mendes’s 2020 album ‘Wonder.’ The song takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions of being panic-stricken at the thought of the singer’s lover leaving him.

‘Wonder’ is Shawn Mendes’s fourth studio album released on December 4, 2020. The lead single and the title track of the album, “Wonder,” was released in October, followed by the second single “Monster” featuring Justin Bieber in November 2020. According to Shawn Mendes, the overarching theme of the album is ‘freedom’ and ‘not being afraid’ to express himself.

The song title “305” refers to the time of five minutes past three o’clock, most likely in the dead of night/morning. To be up at this time, contemplating about non-existent life crises, is a sign of paranoia and insomnia.

“305” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

The song builds on the premise that Shawn Mendes is paranoid about losing his lover. He seems to confess that before she came into his life, he was in a rather dark place and he does not wish to return there. It is not a fun feeling to be up at 3 am in the dead of night with your mind wandering on and about the endless possibilities in life, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.

Throughout the song, Shawn Mendes places the girl on the ‘saving grace’ pedestal of his life. Even though he is in a much better position now that she is in his life, he is afraid that everything will fall apart if she leaves. This is a dangerous amount of leverage to put on another person.

To Shawn Mendes, this girl is the “sunshine on a rainy day,” ‘parachute’ to his skydive, “door to heaven” and so on. And Shawn Mendes is desperate: “And if I had to beg, I’d be on my knees.”
