Billie Eilish – Lo Vas A Olvidar Ft. ROSALÍA | English Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

Recovering from the tragic year of 2020, we are hopeful for some magic in the world in 2021. The music industry is certainly on a high note early in the year, and to make things even more colorful, Billie Eilish released her first song in 2021; “Lo Vas A Olvidar,” and surprise, surprise, it’s a full Spanish track and a collaboration with Spanish singer ROSALÍA.

The song, titled “Lo Vas A Olvidar,” is part of the official soundtrack for HBO’s ‘Euphoria‘ series. Although the collaboration has been no secret since 2019, the song was only released on January 21, 2021.

In an interview with Zane Lowe, Billie Eilish talked about her thought process in creating and singing a song in Spanish, and working with ROSALÍA;

I actually think it’s so beautiful and it’s not something I feel like I’ve done. She [ROSALÍA] just opened a little channel in me that I hadn’t tried out before. Obviously, a lot of it is in Spanish, which I think is so important. I remember when we were writing the song, she said something about like “it should be in English” and I was like “no, no no, it should be in Spanish, it’s so beautiful.” She told me what the lyrics mean and then it meant even more ‘cause I was like, that’s beautiful and the delivery’s beautiful and the emotion is beautiful and it was really fun. It [the song] went through lots of stages, which is kinda rare for us. Usually the production we do is the production we end up with. This one was really not that way. The time I heard it [the song] when it was done I was just like “this is so weird.” I don’t feel like I’ve heard a song that sounds like this. Maybe that’s stupid. I do feel like it’s weird and different.

The song is produced by Billie’s usual collaborator and her brother FINNEAS.

“Lo Vas A Olvidar” English Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

The song is a soothing lullaby of heartache. Both Billie Eilish and ROSALÍA are asking their ex-partners if the decision to let go was worth it? Are they happier now? And have they moved on!

The title of the song “Lo Vas A Olvidar” roughly translates to English as “are you going to forget it?” Both singers wonder if their partners have moved on already. The singers themselves seem to have not moved on a step, and they also seem to have reasons for that.

The Spanish lyric “Dime si no me perdonas aún” translated to English is “Tell me if you still won’t forgive me” and hints that the girls had a bigger part in the breakups. They feel guilty for what they have done and are already regretting their actions that lead to the relationships falling apart.

The following lyric “¿Qué harás con to’ este veneno? Na’ bueno” translated to English is “What will you do with all this poison? Nothing good” and shows the impact the girls had on their relationships. It is as if the girls are admitting and confessing to the ‘poison’ they added to the relationship while it lasted. And the girls are also aware that the boys are going to let that poison out on someone else–and the cycle continues forever. Maybe the girls themselves were poisoned by a previous ex, and they injected this poison into their last relationships.

The lyric “Dame un beso y bájame de la cru'” translated to English is “Give mе a kiss and lower me from the cross,” and tells the pain that the girls carry after the breakup. Carrying a cross is often associated as being a punishment for one’s own doings, which fits perfectly with the theme of the song.

In the outro of the song, both Billie Eilish and ROSALÍA lament about the fruits they reap out of what they sowed. They played with the relationships and they got what was destined-pain!
