Olivia Rodrigo – enough for you | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

“enough for you” is the seventh track on Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 album ‘Sour.’ In the song, Olivia sings about trying to be the best version of herself just to please her man. She went out of her way to be enough for him but all her efforts were not enough to keep him around.

Olivia Rodrigo announced her debut studio album ‘Sour‘ following the massive success she gained with her debut single “driver’s license.” She followed up this success with another single “deja vu.” Announcing the new album, she commented “alsoooooo i f*cked around and made an album. i’m so proud of it.”

Olivia Rodrigo explained what inspired her to write this song on YouTube; “I wrote “enough for you” entirely by myself which I’m very proud of. I wrote it literally on my bedroom floor. I actually was on “breakup” TikTok for a while, which was really funny. I was literally scrolling through TikTok and I found this really hopeful breakup video. It’s so embarrassing that this like inspired this really emotional song, but I really was very inspired by this TikTok.”

“enough for you” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

In the two verses of the song, Olivia Rodrigo sings about all the things she did to make her more appealing to this boy when they were dating. She read books, she wore makeup, she remembered how he liked his coffee, how to dress, tried to better herself with self-help books, and so much more. It baffles her that after all of that why did he still leave her. What more could she have done for him? Was none of this enough for him?

It breaks her heart to realize that he moved on in a split second when he came across someone more interesting. Did he not realize everything she was doing to impress him? Or did he not care at all? These questions still bug her, a month after their breakup.

Olivia realizes that he is gone and there is no point crying over spilled milk. She only wants herself back. The version of herself whom she loved and wanted to better herself. Now she is a mere mess crying over some stupid boy.
