beyonce renaissance album song review

Beyoncé – I’M THAT GIRL | Lyrics Meaning Revealed

“I’m That Girl” is the opening track on Beyonce’s 2022 album ‘Renaissance,’ and what a track it is, to begin with. In this braggadocious track, Beyonce reminds us why she is the queen–no one controls her.

Beyonce released her seventh studio album ‘Renaissance’ on July 29, 2022. The album drops after a six-year hiatus between her previous project ‘Lemonade’ released in 2016. ‘Renaissance’ resembles a resurgence of Beyonce’s career as well as her spirit from the pandemic days; “with all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again. I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible.”

In “I’m That Girl,” Beyonce talks about how she is still that girl in the industry. There may be new girls in the scene right now, but Beyonce was the girl when the industry was very different a few years ago. She paved the way for most of the stars of today.

Beyonce “I’m That Girl” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

Beyonce’s level of self-awareness in “I’m That Girl” comes from an elevated mindset of self-love and realizing that material things are not the cause of happiness.

It’s not the diamonds
It’s not the pearls
I’m that girl (I’m that girl)
It’s just that I’m that girl (I’m that girl)

Almost every artist coming up on the scene start singing about a few bands of dollars and shows a glossy music video of how they are very happy about their current situation. Most of them go under soon. Then they soon realize that those little bands did nothing to enhance their lives. If they do go on to become successful, they soon realize that there’s not enough money in the world to buy the freedom and privacy they once had.

Understanding your self-worth is priceless. There are so many diamonds in this world. A few million miles away from Earth, there are literally endless supplies of diamonds. But there’s only one of you–in all of this seemingly infinite universe. That has to count for something.

As much as Beyonce is THAT girl, you are THAT person!

Touching everything in my plain view
And everything next to me gets lit up too

Beyonce knows that her touch reaches far beyond what meets her eye. Her actions and words have rippling effects on the masses. For example, one of the singles from the ‘Renaissance’ album was “Break My Soul.” The song advocates the freeing of the human soul from the societal rat race, specifically the 9 to 5 work life. And some people actually did quit their jobs!

Beyonce also advocates being high on life, as opposed to being high on drugs and medication. A lot of new artists advocate the latter. It takes a special power in this day and age to vocalize that everything you need to be happy comes from within. This might not be the popular opinion these days.

Cleanse me of my sins
My un-American life

Ouch! Once, the United States of America was considered the land of opportunity and freedom. Today, people are publicly denouncing their citizenship in the USA. Save for the economic prowess, the USA does not stand for much today!
