olivia rodrigo guts album lyrics meaning revealed

Olivia Rodrigo – lacy | Lyrics Meaning Revealed

Olivia Rodrigo spins out an interesting dynamic in her new song “lacy” from ‘GUTS’ album. In the song, we find Olivia obsessing both in jealousy and in awe of a person named Lacy. Haven’t we all had our own version of Lacy at some point in our lives?

Olivia Rodrigo released her second studio album ‘GUTS’ on September 8, 2023. The release of the album was followed by two singles “vampire” and “bad idea right?” Talking to Apple Music, Olivia Rodrigo admitted that her debut album ‘SOUR’ was a lot more spontaneous than anything else. However, her follow-up project ‘GUTS’ was inspired by “lots of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness & good old fashioned teen angst.”

In the song, Olivia Rodrigo is stuck in a love-hate relationship with a girl named Lacy. Olivia loves Lacy because she is everything Olivia wants to be. She also hates Lacy because she will never be like Lacy. Olivia wants everything Lacy has, but laments in the knowledge that she will likely never have what Lacy has. Wound up in an inferiority complex and a God complex, Olivia tells a story a lot of us can relate to.

Olivia Rodrigo “lacy” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

From the start of the song, we find out the duality of the obsession Olivia Rodrigo has with this girl named Lacy. The first line is a compliment and the other line is an expression of either hate or jealousy toward her, and it goes back and forth. Often the people whom we adore and respect the most become our enemies, at no fault of theirs.

Olivia Rodrigo is like a ghost next to Lacy. Everywhere Lacy goes, she becomes the center of attention and talk. All the pretty boys fall for her puff-pasty skin and eyes white as daisies. Her perfume is just the right amount of innocence and seduction. Sometimes, Olivia just wants to be noticed by her.

Smart, sexy Lacy, I’m losin’ it lately

The song borderlines homoeroticism as well. Olivia hates Lacy because she is everything Olivia wants to be. She wants to imagine what it would feel like to be noticed by Lacy. What would it feel like to be complimented by Lacy? Lacy is the perfect creature that ever existed and what wouldn’t Olivia do to be by her for a day?

In the second verse of the song, Olivia compares Lacy to Brigitte Bardot, a French model and actress, considered to be the sexiest of all symbols during the 1950-60s. It is also an interesting coincidence that Sabrina Carpenter recreated an iconic Bardot pose in December 2020. Sabrina Carpenter is the girl Olivia’s ex-boyfriend, Jossua Bassett, got together with after breaking up with Olivia, and inspired Olivia to write her debut hit “driver’s license.” In this song, Olivia admits to being quite insecure about a girl her then-boyfriend was spending time with.

One moment Lacy is made up of angel dust and on the next, she is the sweetest thing in the depths of Hell, for Olivia. This shows the constant struggle Olivia goes through being a speck of dust in the cosmos of Lacy. Everything seems to gravitate toward and around Lacy and Olivia will continue to exist in a corner.

She is everything Olivia wants.
