The release of the album was followed by two singles “vampire” and “bad idea right?” Talking to Apple Music, Olivia Rodrigo admitted that her debut album ‘SOUR’ was a lot more spontaneous than anything else. However, her follow-up project ‘GUTS’ was inspired by “lots of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness & good old fashioned teen angst.”

Throughout time, people have fallen victim to love. We read about them. We watch them in movies. But as soon as the next one comes along, we get hooked as if we trump Romeo and Juliet. Olivia Rodrigo suddenly wakes up from the dream she has been living. It struck her that she had been overlooking all the signs right there in front of her. He was a master manipulator. It just took her a lot more time to realize this than it should have.
Now everything makes sense. All the rumors he has been denying. All the excuses he made throughout their relationship. She was a mere insect trapped in his web of lies. And now she knows that he had other insects trapped in the same web.
In the hook of the song, we find out more about the personality of this guy she was trapped with. He was a master manipulator who had Olivia believing that 2 + 2 = 5. He had his way with words. And she was too emotional to see through them. He actually had her believing that she was the one–she was the queen of his life. Although, logically things did not add up, some part of her heart still skipped a beat when he looked into her eyes. So, she held on.
Now that his walls of lies have come down, she can see clearly for once. Logic has the upper hand now and things seem to add up pretty well. 2 + 2 was still 4 and he was still a cheater and a liar.
Olivia realizes that she cannot blame it all on him. It was his nature. It was Olivia’s job to see through his lies. She did have some help along the way, which she chose to ignore, again, defying logic. Her friends did warn her and tip her off. Oh, but her heart convinced her brain of a whole other story.
Love is hardly logical. Love is definitely blind. Fall carefully.
