hinder lips of an angel lyrics review song meaning and analysis

Hinder – Lips of an Angel (Lyrics Review, Analysis and Meaning)

This is an immortal song-one of those songs you could listen to in another century, and still feel the song to the core of your soul. A passionate, raw emotional track with a twist of Rock music. “Lips of an Angel” was released in 2006 and is still considered one of the best romance ballads ever written. Credits to Austin Winkler, Cody Hanson, Brian Howes and Rey Casiano for lyrics of the song. Although categorized as a hard rock song, “Lips of an Angel” is more of a rock infused ballad, narrating a painful story, that can be related to any period of time.

Without more chit chat, let’s jump into some lyrics analysis of the song. The meaning behind “Lips of an Angel” is one of the reasons it is so popular as well as loved by generations.

Song Meaning, Lyrics Analysis and Review of “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder

The first verse sets up the background to the song. Guy sitting at a table with a phone to his ear and his girl (not girlfriend) is seen on the bed in the back-setting. And he speaks on the phone;

Honey, why are you calling me so late?
It’s kinda hard to talk right now
Honey, why are you crying, is everything okay?
I gotta whisper ’cause I can’t be too loud

Notice that the guy addresses the caller as ‘honey’, which is possibly the sweetest thing a guy could say to a girl. And it’s late in the night. His ‘girl’ is seen in almost-underwear probably preparing for bed. The guy says it is difficult to talk right now because his girl is in the room. Then he hears the girl sob in the line. And he ignores his above statement and settles to whispering. He really wants to talk to the caller.

Well, my girl’s in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on

He has to settle to whispering because his girl is in the adjoining room. She can see him-probably hear him too. It’s interesting that he calls her ‘girl’ and not ‘girlfriend’ or any other affectionate words. It tells how he feels about her. He even wishes it was you-the caller. So we can confirm that the guy is talking to his ex. Their breakup was probably unexpected or unforeseen. Clearly they did not fall out-she is calling him in the middle of the night crying-and he picks up the phone and keeps on talking to her despite his girl being in the room. They have not moved on from their breakup.

It’s really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words – it makes me weak

It’s been quite a while since they have broken up or talked to each other. He loves it. She calls him by his name and his knees give up. There’s no more pleasure in the world for him right now than to speak with her. He calls her an angel–words coming out of the lips of an angel. He truly is enchanted by her.

And I never wanna say goodbye
But, girl, you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel

He doesn’t want to hang up the phone right now. He doesn’t want any more goodbyes, with his ex. He want to move on, he wants to be faithful to his current girl. But the angels’ voice calling out his name is too much for him to handle. It brings back memories-memories of all the sweetest times they had together. He probably have forgotten why they separated-or what made them separate.

It’s funny that you’re calling me tonight
And, yes, I’ve dreamt of you too
And does he know you’re talking to me?
Will it start a fight?
No, I don’t think she has a clue

“Lips of an Angel” gets more interesting now. Both of them have been dreaming about each other. Maybe, just last night he dreamt of her–hence the funniness in the night she picked to call him.

The next line very beautifully says how she has a new guy in his life too. So both of them have moved on, but not really moved on at the same time. She has a new guy in his life and he has a new girl in his life. He asks if he knows about this call. She probably answers ‘yes’, justified by the next line in the song-‘will it start a fight’. I think they are already in a fight, which is the reasons for her calling him at this hour and the reason for her crying. So most likely she doesn’t care if it leads to more fights. She sounds fed up. And she asks the same thing from the guy. And he responds that his girls doesn’t have a clue who he is talking to. This probably hints at how ignorant or careless his girl is.

The chorus repeats twice before “Lips of an Angel” comes to an end. The song ends in a solemn sentence;

Honey, why are you calling me so late?

He is pressing why she is calling him in the middle of the night. He really needs an answer. And the answer he is looking for is that she misses him, and possibly want to get back together.

So ends a beautifully worded rock-romance-ballad to be enjoyed for decades to come-maybe even more.
