Before getting into the lyrics breakdown, it would be helpful to see what Ed Sheeran had to say about the song. In an interview with Music Choice, Ed Sheeran says he thinks that “Perfect” is better than “Thinking Out Loud.”

I think the song “Perfect” is actually better than “Thinking Out Loud.” I think there was always a scare that “Thinking Out Loud” would define me and define my career. So I, I wrote a lot of songs trying to beat it and now I think, I think I have beaten it.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Perfect”

The lyrics to “Perfect” are not complicated. They are beautiful and can easily be understood by anybody. So I will run through annotations where it is necessary.

Verse 1

I found a love for me
Darling, just dive right in and follow my lead
Well, I found a girl, beautiful and sweet
Oh, I never knew you were the someone waiting for me
‘Cause we were just kids when we fell in love
Not knowing what it was
I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own
And in your eyes, you’re holding mine

Apparently, “Perfect” is a song about Ed Sheeran’s girlfriend Cherry Seaborn. We will see the subtle connections in this verse.

Cherry Seaborn is a 24 year old from Suffolk, United Kingdom, the place where Ed Sheeran grew up as he magnificently describes in another ‘Divide’ track “Castle On The Hill.” So when the first verse says “Cause we were just kids when we fell in love” we know this refers to a long time love from back in England and Cherry Seaborn fits the description.

Chorus

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight

The chorus of “Perfect” is quite stunningly beautiful. It describes a scenario where the couple is dancing on the green grass, barefoot, while their favorite song plays in the background, under the moonlight. They are holding tight and she says she looks like a mess. He whispers in her ears that she looks nothing sort of perfection tonight. A slow whisper it may be, but the girl hears it very loud!

Verse 2

Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own
We are still kids, but we’re so in love
Fighting against all odds
I know we’ll be alright this time
Darling, just hold my hand
Be my girl, I’ll be your man
I see my future in your eyes

Ed Sheeran compares himself with the love of his life. He feels so at home with her, they share the same dreams and he wishes he could someday share a house with her. He wants the whole white picket fence and kids deal with her. They have problems, but love conquers them all.

Chorus 2

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
I don’t deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight

The second time the chorus comes around in “Perfect” it is a little different than the first. In the first chorus the girl was doubting about her looks and the singer says she looks perfect. The second chorus has one line changed where the singer appreciates her beauty in a beautiful dress she wore that night.

Chorus 3

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
I have faith in what I see
Now I know I have met an angel in person
And she looks perfect
I don’t deserve this
You look perfect tonight

Three different choruses appear rarely in a song and Ed Sheeran has managed that into “Perfect” and it is even more beautiful.

The third chorus too is a complete infatuation of the singer about his girlfriend. He even calls her an angel and he doubts that he deserves a person like this.

The third chorus marks the end of “Perfect” and it is insanely beautiful. But is it better than “Thinking Out Loud”? In my honest opinion, I don’t really believe so. But we would like to hear your opinion as well. So leave your comments about “Perfect” in the comments below and let us know which song is the better!

  1. When I heard Ed Sheeran’s brand new song Perfect in March 2017 the words were so meaningful and powerful to me that I couldn’t hold back tears, this song reminded me of my first and only true love, when we fell in love in our teenage years, the verse…..we were just kids when we fell in love……not knowing what it was, I will not give you up this time……also we were fighting our parents against all odds……we love dancing in the dark, we have danced barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song…… I know every word to this song and every time I hear it on the radio I get very emotional. I am glad to say that my first love is my husband of 38 years and we re still very in much in love…… Thinking out Loud is a very lovely song but for my husband and I, Perfect shall be our favourite song about hoe perfect this song is about us.

    1. That is so nice to hear. That is one of the unique things about music. They can trigger the most dusted emotions within ourselves and set us on a self-discovery.

And your love story is a true inspiration to this generation. 38 years together in this versatile world is an accomplishment to be proud of. But then again when two people love each other as much as you two do, I guess everyday feels like a victory. Congratulations and wishing you many more years of happy married life. 🙂
