Calvin Harris and Sam Smith Premier “Promises” Track (Lyrics Review)

You know you are in for a treat when talents such as Calvin Harris and Sam Smith get together. The brand new single “Promises” is produced by Calvin Harris, along with lyrics by Calvin, Sam Smith, and Jessie Reyez. The single will potentially be from an upcoming album of Calvin. This is the first time Calvin and Sam have collaborated on a song. However, Calvin and Jessie Reyez collaborated on a hit track “Hard to Love” previously.

“Promises” follows Calvin’s massive hit “One Kiss” with Dua Lipa. The new single has a discotheque aura and the lyric video released on 17th August is quite retro. The video features very sketchy clips of a disco club with shots of Calvin and Sam Smith.

“Promises” talk about how the singer is not looking for a long-term relationship with a specific woman. He is only ready to commit for the night. This probably was the aura in disco clubs in the early 70s and 80s.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Promises”

Verse 1

The singer is relying on the intoxicated inhibitions of the girl to try and take her home. He wants her to make a mistake. Hence, he relies on her being drunk enough or high enough. The singer cannot commit to this woman. He wants a one night stand, but she might not oblige in her sound senses.

He calls himself ‘ruined’ for the fact that he cannot commit to a relationship.

Chorus

The singer knows this story is not one of those fairy tales where boy meets girl and they live happily ever after. There is no that kind of chemistry. There is only just sexual tension or interest, and Sam Smith rephrases it as ‘magic.’

This probably would have been the setting in disco clubs back in the days. Even to-date, the club atmosphere is not much different from this.

The singer says he cannot make promises of any golden rings (marriage), but he can make her feel like a queen for the night.

Verse 2

Back in the disco, the sexual tension is building up. He is eyeing her, which is almost a loud cry at this point. She is not anything special as the singer confesses that he needs “somebody” for the night “to do the things.’ He is burning inside with desire, and the energy is overflowing.

We love how “Promises” writers have made a strong attempt to sugarcoat the purely sexual desires and tension of this person. The disco-beat makes it possible to dance to this song in a club. What a twist that would be!
