Madonna’s “God Control” Video Is the Perfect Wake Up Call for Gun Control

Posted on June 29, 2019June 29, 2019 By Adam McDonald No Comments on Madonna’s “God Control” Video Is the Perfect Wake Up Call for Gun Control

One resoundingly controversial track from Madonna’s fourteenth studio album ‘Madame X,’ is “God Control.” The song seems to be talking about the necessity of reforms to control the absolute free usage and abuse of guns in the United States. However, the song title has been altered to “god” from “gun” possibly because it has seemingly become an impossible task despite the tregedies we hear everyday.

“I want to draw attention through my platform as an artist to a problem in America that is out of control and is taking the lives of innocent people. This crisis can end if our legislators act to change the laws that fail to protect us all. This is your wake up call. Gun violence disproportionately affects children, teenagers and the marginalized in our communities … Honour the victims and demand GUN CONTROL. NOW. Volunteer, stand up, donate, reach out. Wake up and insist on common-sense gun safety legislation … Innocent lives depend on it.”

Madonna/RollingStone

The music video premiered on June 28, 2019, has stirred up quite the controversy due to its graphic visuals of gun violence. The video is themed around the massacre in the homosexual night club in Orlando leaving 50 dead on the spot and more than 53 wounded, on June 11, 2016. The music video re-enacts the scenes counter-clockwise.

Madonna delivers a powerful performance in the “God Control” music video where she acts as a victim who reports the events of the day–typing on her typewriter. She also acts the role of a person who attended the nightclub during the shooting.

Along with the release of the video, Madonna shared some wisdom and a call-to-action to bring about an order into this chaos;

“This is your wake up call. Gun violence disproportionately affects children, teenagers and the marginalized in our communities. Honour the victims and demand GUN CONTROL. NOW. Volunteer, stand up, donate, reach out. Wake up and insist on common-sense gun safety legislation. Innocent lives depend on it. Join me in supporting the following organizations:

The counter at the end of the video shows numbers ticking up, and the caption reads “annual victims of gun violence:” which seems to be the bitter truth all in power seems to share a blind eye towards.
