Louis Tomlinson – Don’t Let It Break Your Heart (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

Louis Tomlinson finally released the official single of “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart” after being played live on several occasions. The former One Directioner first premiered the new song at the Coca-Cola Music Experience 2019 event in September and yesterday performed the song for the first time live on X Factor: Celebrity semi-final round. Let us explore further into what this new song means.

“Don’t Let It Break Your Heart” released as the fourth promotional single off of Louis’ debut solo studio album titled ‘Walls.’ While the album is expected to release in January 2020, we have already heard several singles throughout 2019; “Kill My Mind,” “Two of Us” and “We Made It.”

The new single “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart” is all about recollecting the broken soul after a heartbreak. The song also addresses various other hardships in life as well. But understandably, heartbreak stemming out of lost love is quite the most difficult pain to absorb. This song acts as a supporter to anyone and everyone who has gone or going through a heartbreak–which is all of us. Watch the lyric video below.

In the first verse of the song, Louis explains how things change in your life and around you. The reference to ‘Twenty Seven’ could be of his age. Born on December 24, 1991, Louis Tomlinson is 27 years old at the time of the song release. However, the lyrics read “On our way to Twenty Seven,” which hints that he is talking about a place named ‘Twenty Seven.’ He talks about moving to the other side of London and doing better now. Possibly a reference to his state after the split of One Direction band.

Louis also sings about a ‘you’ who moved from New York. The interesting bit is that everybody leaves a part of themselves when they move. Louis Tomlinson and his girlfriend Eleanor Calder did live in an apartment in New York in 2017.

In the pre-chorus, Louis sets up the tempo for the theme of the song. Life can get tough at times, but it can better at times as well. Highs can be unpredictably high and the lows can be deeper than you can ever imagine. Throughout these ups and downs, your partner should be your constant. When that starts to vary, it could just be too much to handle. Louis Tomlinson and Eleanor Calder dated from 2011 to 2015 and broke up only to rekindle their affair in 2017 (source).

The chorus provides some motivational words to all of us who are going through heartbreaks. Everyone says ‘time’ heals all wounds. But what they don’t say is that time also needs time to do its magic. It might also take some helpful hands to mend the pieces of your broken heart into whole again. Good company, good words and time will surely get you back on track. Until such time, you have to hang on, no matter how much it hurts or kills inside.

Louis Tomlinson says that as much as everything around us changes, your heartbreak pain will also change for the better, in the second verse. You will definitely heal when you allow yourself to heal. Heartbreak is a one-way road. There is no turning back. If you turn back, you will have to travel the same thorny road again and again. It is best to just focus on the road ahead.
