Madison Beer – Selfish | Lyrics Review and Song Meaning

Madison Beer vocalizes about her failed romance on a brand new track titled “Selfish.” The song released on Valentine’s Day 2020, which might no be the perfect theme for the day. Or is it? Let’s take a look at the background of this heartbreak anthem.

“Selfish” releases as the second single off of Madison Beer’s debut studio album titled ‘Life Support.’ “Good in Goodbye” was released as the lead single off the album on January 31, 2020. The full album is expected to drop in late March 2020.

In a Tweet, Madison Beer mentioned that “Selfish” was the “most difficult song to write.” This is likely due to the fact that the song is based around her relationship with ex-boyfriend Zack Bia. The two had an on-and-off relationship for about two years until they publicly split up in July 2018. Madison Beer later talked about this public feud and explained that she did not hit him as some people claimed her to do.

Upon releasing the song, Madison Beer Tweeted about her feelings towards it; “this song pulls on every heart string in my chest and it will be yours tonight at midnight. selfish 🖤”

Verse 1

Madison Beer reminisces about her 2-year relationship with her ex-boyfriend. In hindsight, she realizes that their relationship was a lost cause from the beginning. She has no hopes of fixing this breakup because that boy is not capable of even fixing himself.

Pre-chorus

Madison may have tried to fix this boy while they were together. But now that they are apart, she does not want to do him any more favors. It is not like he will learn or change anyway.

Chorus

‘Selfishness’ in this ex-boyfriend seems to have been the major cause of this breakup. She realizes this early on but she decided to keep loving him anyway. She hoped he would change, which was too much to hope for.

Verse 2

In the second verse of the song, Madison Beer gets even more personal about her relationship with Zack Bia. She tells him that she did not enjoy all those nights at nightclubs. It was not what love is. Maybe it was Zack’s idea to visit these places and live it up, every night.

Madison also reveals Zack’s zodiac sign to be Gemini. The sign of Gemini has both positive and negative thoughts. Madison could be referring to the negatives of it being; afraid of commitment, unreliable and two-faced.

Bridge

These lyrics state that Madison is finally over with her ex forever. She does not want to be responsible for someone who does not understand what ‘responsibility’ is. And most of his problems are his own doings. So why should she bother now!

  1. Hey there, JRT Team! 🎵 Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for breaking down Madison Beer’s “Selfish” lyrics. It’s one of those songs that hits you right in the feels, you know? Like, Madison really poured her heart out in this track, and you guys did an awesome job dissecting it.

I totally agree with your interpretation of the song being about the struggle between self-love and wanting someone else’s affection. That line about “burying her heart in the sand” really resonated with me. It’s like she’s trying to protect herself from getting hurt again, but at the same time, she can’t help but yearn for that connection. Keep up the great work on these lyric reviews, they’re seriously insightful! ✨
