Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “New Rules”

Verse 1

Talkin’ in my sleep at night
Makin’ myself crazy
(Out of my mind, out of my mind)
Wrote it down and read it out
Hopin’ it would save me
(Too many times, too many times)
My love, he makes me feel like nobody else
Nobody else
But my love, he doesn’t love me, so I tell myself
I tell myself

In verse 1 the singer is heartbroken, she has lost the love of her life and has a hard time coping with it. She uses different coping mechanisms to no avail. She thought he was the one, but he did not think the same of her. So she is moving on.

Pre-chorus

One, don’t pick up the phone
You know he’s only calling ’cause he’s drunk and alone
Two, don’t let him in
You’ll have to kick him out again
Three, don’t be his friend
You know you’re gonna wake up in his bed in the morning
And if you’re under him, you ain’t getting over him

This is where her girlfriends help her. First step, they don’t let you pick up the phone and call your ex. Everybody knows where that road goes to. If he calls, still they don’t let you answer the phone because he only does that when he is drunk and lonely and wants a princess for the night.

Secondly, her friends tell her not to let him back in, because it will end the same way it did the first time around.

Thirdly, they don’t let you be friends with your ex. Exes, in many cases, cannot be friends. If you are having ‘friends with benefits’ with him, you are never getting over him.

Chorus

I got new rules, I count ’em
I got new rules, I count ’em
I gotta tell them to myself
I got new rules, I count ’em
I gotta tell them to myself

With a little support from her friends, the singer is winning the breakup. Girl empowerment is the new rule.

Verse 2

I keep pushin’ forwards, but he keeps pullin’ me backwards
(Nowhere to turn) no way
(Nowhere to turn) no
Now I’m standing back from it, I finally see the pattern
(I never learn, I never learn)
But my love, he doesn’t love me, so I tell myself
I tell myself
I do, I do, I do

Whilst the woman is pushing the relationship forward, the guy is pushing it backwards. This means that he is not ready to commit or have a serious relationship. So now that she is not in his enchants, she can see things clearly now and she is having none of it again.

Bridge

Practice makes perfect
I’m still tryna’ learn it by heart
(I got new rules, I count ’em)
Eat, sleep, and breathe it
Rehearse and repeat it, ’cause I
(I got new, I got new, I…)

Getting over a relationship is not an easy task, it takes guts and a lot of support. That is when your friends come in handy. “New Rules” is entirely about supporting one another and this doesn’t merely apply to girls exclusively. The same thing goes for guys.

However, we think this is some quality music by the young Dua Lipa and it is evident from the popularity of the video on social media.
