Avril Lavigne got on the stage for the first time in over 4 years to present her latest single “Head Above Water” to the world. Coming back from recovery, Avril uses this song as a confession of the struggles she endured for the past few years. The “Complicated” singer, suffered from Lyme Disease since 2015 and has been under treatments ever since.
The new song “Head Above Water” is inspired by her experiences of dealing with Lyme disease. The song speaks about how few factors such as God and her mother helped her keep her head above the water when she felt like she was slowly drowning. This disease, spread through ticks, spreads to critical motor and neuron systems and shuts them down slowly, if untreated properly. Avril has created a new charitable foundation ‘The Avril Lavigne Foundation’ to spread awareness and help the patients suffering from Lyme disease.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC on September 24th, Avril delivered an emotional and amazing rendition of the new single. She looked healthy, sounded powerful and poured her heart out to the performance.

This live performance happened less than a week since the official release of the single on September 19th.
Several days before the release of the single, Avril Lavigne opened up about the upcoming song on her website:
“Thank you for waiting so patiently as I fought through and still continue to fight, the battle of my lifetime. The first song I am choosing to release is called “Head Above Water.” It is also the first song I wrote from my bed during one of the scariest moments of my life. I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe. Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water. To help me see through the stormy weather. I grew closer to Him. My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story. I later met a beautiful soul, Travis Clark, and we sat down at the piano and sculpted the rest of the song. Then I took it to the genius, Stephan Moccio and love what he did to the music.”
We hope this song becomes a beacon of light to those who seek help and relief from any pitfall they are struggling in. We hope this single gives them hope and assistance during their weakest moments.
