Avril Lavigne’s comeback single “Head Above Water” has left us with mixed emotions. In one hand she looks very good in the new video and on the other hand she talks about her struggle while being diagnosed with the Lyme disease.
Avril Lavigne announced that she was diagnosed with the Lyme disease back in 2015. Ever since she has been sharing updates on her health situation with the fans via social media. She has also started the charity program ‘The Avril Foundation‘ to help fight Lyme disease and spread awareness about the disease.
Lyme disease, also known as Lyme borreliosis, is an infectious disease caused by Borrelia bacteria, spread by ticks. In untreated at early stages, the disease can quickly spread to core departments of the body making them slowly shut down. In a letter to the fans, she wrote: “I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going underwater and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe.” This is the inspiration behind the new single “Head Above Water.”
In 2017, Avril took to Twitter to announce that she is working on a new album.

This will be Avril’s first album since the 2013 self-titled album release.

The entire music video is based on the idea of how you feel drowning in water when your life is threatened. Worst of all you have to watch it happening, helpless, in slow motion. In the new song, Avril prays for God’s strength to keep her head above the water from drowning.
Throughout her recovery, Avril Lavigne has expressed her two sources of strength: God and her mom.
“In (my mother’s) arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story.”
The song is a confessional on how she dealt with this potentially life-threatening sickness that almost ended her career. In the new single and video, she gives us hope for a better musical career to come. She reaches her classic high notes in this new song as well.
