Lil Nas X – Old Town Road (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

Lil Nas X has a big hit under his name thanks to the viral hit “Old Town Road.”

The singer released the song back in December 2018 and the song gained attention on the popular meme app TikTok. Fans created their own versions of the video to this track under the hashtag #oldtownroad.

“Old Town Road” is an adoration of the cowboy lifestyle. In the song lyrics, Lil Nas X describes the male-dominant Wild Wild West. However, a Tweet by the artist suggests that there’s more than what meets the eyes in these lyrics.

Is Nas talking about how the economy of the US is being pushed from behind (as opposed to dragging from the front like horses do)? If he is not, he is definitely drawing some similarities to sports cars with engines (horsepower) in the rear-end of the car with this sentence. The song also draws a subtle comparison between his actual horse and the horse logo on a Porche car.

Nas also joins in his thoughts on consumerism by mentioning a few popular high-end fashion brands such as matt black boots and shoes to match, Porche cars, Gucci cowboy hat and ‘Wrangler’ jeans.

Lil Nas X also explains how more experienced he is than the average Joe of the US. He says that he has been deep into the valley while the average Joe has not got out of his home porch.

In the second verse of “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X talks about his high-life in the Wild West. He wears Wrangler jeans and Gucci cowboy hats. He cheated on his ‘baby’ and she knows. His life is like a movie reel with so much action, even of sexual pleasures.

Lil Nas X released a teaser music video to “Old Town Road” from a video montage from the popular video game ‘Red Dead Redemption 3’ released last year.
