Taylor Swift – Cornelia Street (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“Cornelia Street” is the ninth track on the seventh studio album ‘Lover’ by Taylor Swift.

The much-anticipated 2019 album ‘Lover’ contains 18 tracks on the standard edition including three singles “ME!” featuring Brendon Urie, “You Need to Calm Down” and the title track “Lover.” The new album is in complete contrast to Taylor’s previous album ‘Reputation’ released in 2017, which focused on speaking out her mind against her haters. In this era, however, Taylor Swift is in love, and that reflects throughout the album.

“Cornelia Street” is allegedly about how Taylor Swift met her current boyfriend and British actor Joe Alwyn in 2016. Listen to the song below.

“Cornelia Street” song starts off with Taylor Swift being in the backseat of a car with another person next to her. This line draws a direct resemblance to the lyric “Squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi/I can tell that it’s gonna be a long road” from her 2017 track “New Year’s Day.” She admits that both of them are drunk on alcohol, but the feelings of love grow on her even stronger.

In 2016, Taylor Swift lived shortly in Cornelia Street in New York City. 2016 is also the year in which Taylor Swift met her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn. The two supposedly met at the 2016 Met Gala event.

Being so in love also has its own pitfalls. Should the relationship come to an unfortunate end, the recovery would be near devastating. Taylor admits that she would never walk the Cornelia Streets again if this relationship came to an end, as she would not be able to tolerate all the memories they made. The song continues to lay out their memories on this specific street, such as walking in the rain, holding hands sitting on the rooftop and so on.

The song starts and ends with a sentence Taylor Swift whispers in the car to the person next to her. She says “I rent a place on Cornelia Street.” This is an open invitation for her partner to visit her in her house that she rents. This might very well be the first time she and her boyfriend had sex.
