“Paper Rings” is the eighth track on the seventh studio album ‘Lover’ by Taylor Swift.
The much-anticipated 2019 album ‘Lover’ contains 18 tracks on the standard edition including three singles “ME!” featuring Brendon Urie, “You Need to Calm Down” and the title track “Lover.” The new album is in complete contrast to Taylor’s previous album ‘Reputation’ released in 2017, which focused on speaking out her mind against her haters. In this era, however, Taylor Swift is in love, and that reflects throughout the album.
“Paper Rings” is a swoon-ey dedication of Taylor’s love to her lover and how she would give up on her love of a diamond engagement ring to one made of paper for his love. Listen to the song below.

“Paper Rings,” too, is based around Taylor’s current boyfriend Joe Alwyn and her love for him. The biggest giveaway of the link to Joe Alwyn is when Taylor sings “I’m with you even if it makes me blue/Which takes me back/To the color that we painted your brother’s wall.” This is a recollection of a true event which was photographed and distributed with the VIP boxes of the ‘Reputation’ stadium tour. Taylor also sings that all of the mistakes she did in the past, with regards to her love life, have lead her to him. So, she does not look back at them with sadness. Instead, she looks at the future with optimism.
The title of the song comes into play to show the devotion of Taylor to her lover. She admits that she likes shiny things, referring to diamond engagement rings. But, for this love, she would settle for a ring made out of paper. This love is more valuable than anything that shines.
