Lizzo – Truth Hurts (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

A song released in 2017 revived in 2019 to become Lizzo’s first-ever single to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Truth Hurts” reemerged on streaming platforms courtesy of the increasing popularity of Lizzo in late 2018 and throughout 2019 due to song releases such as “Juice” and “Tempo.”

“Truth Hurts” is a single from Lizzo’s third studio album titled ‘Cuz I Love You’ released on September 2017. However, in May 2019 the song made its way to the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed the chart to reach #1 on September 2019. The song spent four weeks at the top.

“Truth Hurts” talks about a relationship in which Lizzo is not ready to be held back by its constraints. Lizzo expected him to hold her back from going crazy from the society around her. But instead of holding her down, he held her back, and that is something she cannot afford in her life. Watch the music video below.

In the first verse of “Truth Hurts,” Lizzo explains why she had to let go of his ex. He was non-committal in the relationship and he tried to keep her down from soaring to be the chart-topping artist she is today. Lizzo tells us that she would have stayed by his side, stood up for him, help him with his career and everything. But he was not up to the challenge. Lizzo is just 31-years-old. So, she has boy problems. All of us do. But she also solves them by herself. That is something most of us don’t do.

The chorus of the song asks the audience a rhetorical question “why are men great until they are not great?” This addresses to the fluid nature of relationships, especially in the 21st Century. There is no 100 knowing or understanding of your partner. Moving on from the past relationship, Lizzo seeks help from her friends, not just emotionally but also with a new hairdo, to figuratively ‘get him out of her hair.’

Most importantly, Lizzo is already moving on. And not just with anybody. A football player of Minnesota Vikings has been reaching out to her and she confesses that they went on a date. Lizzo moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2011.
