Rex Orange County – Sunflower (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

Alexander O’Connor better known by his stage name Rex Orange County premiered the beautiful track “Sunflower” on March 22, 2017. The song soon recognized the unique talents of the then 19-year-old artist which propelled his career further.

The Brit artist has two studio albums out already, and third, titled ‘Pony’ is just around the corner. “Pluto Projector” is his latest release from the 2019 album. However, the “Sunflower” track did not make it into any albums so far, which is a beautiful gesture itself.

“Sunflower” is a song dedicated to Rex’s girlfriend Thea Morgan-Murrell, with whom Rex lives in London. Rex’s sophomore album ‘Apricot Princess’ released in 2017, is also a complete dedication to Thea. The album title is Rex’s nickname to Thea.

Watch “Sunflower” Music Video

The music video shows Rex Orange County is two contrasting scenarios. For the first half of the video, he seems unhappy, demotivated, lonely and down. At one point in the video, it looks as if he makes a conscious decision to change himself and his attitudes. Thereafter, everything seems positive with him and around him. This could allude to his real life and the turning point of his life after meeting his girlfriend.

Rex has equalled his girlfriend to a ‘Sunflower,’ which is symbolic of light, power and innocence. In the lyrics of the song, Rex confesses his unconditional love for her and questions his existence without her. He does not shy away to say he is obsessed with her.

In the intro of the song, Rex clarifies that Thea came into his life at a low point in his life; “Then I fell to the ground.” Then he continues to sing how she picked him up and motivated him to keep going. For this, he will forever cherish her presence.

‘Sunflower’ is a flower with special abilities in the kingdom of flora. This flower traces the movement of the Sun, turning its face towards the Sun moving across the sky. This is done to maximize the intake of sunlight which is essential for the plant’s survival. But this flower not only possesses these magic abilities, but it is also both beautiful and elegant. Rex gladly compares his girlfriend to this flower, who was a beacon of light and a compass in his life.
