Billie Eilish – Therefore I Am | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

More exciting news for Billie Eilish fans as she took to social media today to announce her upcoming brand new single “Therefore I Am.” The song is expected to release on November 11, 2020.

The new single comes after her first release in 2020 titled “my future.” Both songs are possible candidates for Billie’s upcoming second studio album, following her debut album ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’ in March 2019.

The artwork for “Therefore I Am” shows a shattering ceramic in an orange background. This could hint at something chaotic from the upcoming single.

The self-directed music video shows Billie Eilish wandering in an empty mall. She wears her usual baggy clothes and her new luminescent hair.

“Therefore I Am” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

The song title and the theme of the song are borrowed from the famous philosophical quote “I think, therefore I am.” The phrase originating from Latin “Cogito, ergo sum,” means that thoughts give birth to one’s existence.

Chorus

The lyrics to the song finds Billie Eilish attempting to stand against ‘The Man.’ Or, in a more loose sense, she is standing against the cultural norms that restrict people’s freedom. Billie says that no one can tell her what to do because she is her own woman, independent, and self-confident. She could also be alluding to the constant body-shaming she receives, which has made her resort to wearing baggy clothes. But, in this chorus, she takes a strong stance for herself and tells everyone else that no one can tell her how she should behave or think about herself.

Verse 1

The first verse of the song is no different from Billie’s stance against her critics and the gossip culture. She tells everyone that no one knows her story or just her in general. No one can make any claims about anyone without actually being them, which is impossible. No matter how many arguments anyone brings up to draw similarities or differences between themselves and Billie, they are all futile attempts.

Everyone thinks they are perfect, and only themselves are so. And they only see the flaws and mistakes of others. So, in a sense, we all live in our own bubbles, in our own hilltops. But that is merely our own imagination.

Pre-chorus

The most important part of the song is in the pre-chorus, where Billie Eilish welcomes the critics to have all the fun they want. If Billie Eilish was trying to stop everyone from knitting stories about her, she would come to realize that it is an impossible reality. The best way to face the critics is to just move on. Billie welcomes these people to make stories about her, body shame her, and criticize her, and she would not care less!

Verse 2

In the second verse of “Therefore I Am,” Billie Eilish talks about the ‘press’ which is the main source of gossip and misinformation.

Billie Eilish also talks about how she has to filter herself in public in fear of having articles on top of articles on every blog out there. She has to be on her best behavior, from her talk to walk to clothes to looks. This must be exhausting.

“Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish is a strong statement for the common pitfalls of stardom all artists endure.
