“Holiday” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

In the lyrics of the song, Lil Nas X touches a few topics such as his sexual orientation, throwback to his previous hit, saluting at a few other songs by other artists, and overall spreading the joys of the holiday season.

In the first verse of the song, Lil Nas X sings about his ‘bottom’ and ‘top’ nature in his sexual persona. In homosexuality, ‘bottom’ is slang for a person receiving sex and ‘top’ refers to the person giving sex, or on top of the ‘bottom’ character. Lil Nas X hinted at him being gay in 2019, so this line relates to him on a personal level. Also, the same two terms can be used to describe ‘highs’ and ‘lows,’ in which case, Lil Nas X claims that he is on top of his game.

In the pre-chorus of the song, Nas shout outs at the mega hit track “Bad” by Michael Jackson.

In the second verse of the song, Lil Nas X seems to claim that his mega-hit track “Old Town Road” is a “gimmicky” track, meaning it has nothing beyond its face value. He also adds that the industry had not been kind to him before his breakout hit. So, he has no remorse towards using a “gimmicky” track to make his own path forward.
