Coldplay – Let Somebody Go Ft. Selena Gomez | Lyrics Meaning Explained

Returning from the massively successful promo single “My Universe” with BTS, Coldplay announced another big collaboration. The next single out from their album is titled “Let Somebody Go,” and it features Selena Gomez. The melodic track talks about the pains of letting somebody walkout from their lives.

“Let Somebody Go” is the third promotional track from Coldplay’s ninth studio album ‘Music of the Spheres,’ scheduled to be released on October 15, 2021. This is their follow-up project to their 2019 project ‘Everyday Life.’

On Apple Music, Christ Martin of Coldplay explained the meaning behind the song; “It’s just a really lovely ballad. And quite early on we realised it needed a female counterpart to the vocal. And we were very grateful that when we asked Selena to sing on it, she loved the song and was happy to do so.”

Coldplay “Let Somebody Go” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

Entwined within the beautiful melody is a sadness that comes with heartbreak. Christ Martin sings how two people could share some of the most precious moments together, they could still end up not meant to be together. Whatever the circumstances may be, it could just not be meant to.

When you are in love with someone, everything looks just brighter and better. Coldplay says this girl put a golden halo around the whole world of the singer. Everything looked golden and better. But when the heartbreak hits, everything turns dark. It is as if all the stars were turned off in a blink of an eye.

You gave everything this golden glow
Now turn off all the stars, ’cause this I know

It hurts to let someone you loved go. But this is life. Sometimes, what looks to be the best, may not be the path you are intended to take. There is nothing much we can do about it than just move on and try to heal.

Selena Gomez’s vocals act as the female counterpart in this tragic love story. She reminisces all the storms they weathered as a couple and how much stronger they made them as a couple. But when it is time to let go, there is not much any of them can do about it.

Selena Gomez attempts to ‘understand’ love. She calls up mathematicians to explain the right formula for love. They don’t get back to her with good news. They tell her that love = pain.

When I called the mathematicians and I asked them to explain
They said love is only equal to the pain

A person going through heartbreak will perceive love to be nothing more than pain. While this is true in a sense (the stronger you attach yourself, the more painful it would be to separate), it does not necessarily have to equal pain. When, eventually, it does work out, love can be magical. But, until you find that magic, you have to have your heart broken over and over again.

This song is hit us right in the feels.

  1. I can relate the song to the issues I’m going through right me and my girl friend broke some weeks ago due to unknown reasons but she chose to walk away now it’s hard for me to forget about her the more I try to let go the more I’m hurtin’ because she was the ★ stars in my night sky

  2. This is a fantastic beautiful song only lovers will understand. Beautifully written and perfectly performed. Masterpiece ❤️

  3. Danny I totally understand the exact same issue I had no commitment no effort and a lot of sorry’s but still nothing. So had to let go. Hope you meet some one who brings you the love and care you deserve ❤️

  4. My partner and I recently broke up due to his complications of not wanting a committed relationship so I definitely can relate to these lyrics. Thank you for making such a beautiful masterpiece of a song. Letting go is the hardest thing but it’s the right thing to do to move on…. Let the healing begin

  5. it could mean memories. remnants of the past.

“but you’re still with me, now i know.”

though they parted, some parts of his partner remained and maybe those parts became his too that’s why she’s still with him, not literally tho

  6. just my interpretation of it,
I think in the beginning of the song, it was just the thought of letting someone you love go.
And in that line you mentioned, that he now knows. He let her go already, but “you’re still with me” probably means she’s still in his heart even after she’s gone, now he knows “it hurts like so”.

  7. I don’t quite get the meaning of the last part:

“But you’re still with me, now I know”

So, who is “you” in here, because it can’t be the partner, can it?
