Lana Del Rey “If You Lie Down with Me” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

In the first and second verses of the song, Lana Del Rey sings about how she wants things to go with her lover. Riding horses around, dancing around, twirling around, and whispering her sweet-nothings with a whiskey breath.

Treat me nice, talk to me with that whiskey breath
Twirl me twice, I’ll treat you like a holiday

However, things are not as rosy-cheeked as they are.

And don’t say you’re over me

The relationship is drawing its last breaths. Lana wants to believe that there is still some part of this relationship alive. But maybe one more dance will turn things around. Maybe it won’t. But at least she will feel something for one last time.

In the second verse of the song, Lana says she thought she was in for the long haul with him. But they burnt away like a cinder and turned into dust faster than she hoped. It was good while it lasted but now it’s time to move on – a truth Lana knows but does not want to confront.

The singer invites her partner to lie next to her – a sentiment of affection towards one another and her way of submitting to the inevitable end.
