Ed Sheeran “The Joker and The Queen” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

In this song, Ed Sheeran sings about a relationship that blossomed against all the odds. He compares it to the classic tales of the court jester falling in love with the princess and vice versa. Ed Sheeran had nothing to hide to her – he admits that he had nothing to offer her. But she still accepted him for who he is.

I showed you my hand and you still let me win

The Joker and The Queen are also parts of playing cards. The Joker card has no value and is omitted from normal names. The Queen card, on the other hand, is the second-most powerful card in the deck.

Ed Sheeran knows that a broken road brought them together, hinting that they were not meant to happen. But some of the most beautiful stories are born out of relationships that were not meant to be. Some of the strongest connections are built on their journey through a broken road.

Ed Sheeran sings that she could have done so much better. She could have had any prince in the kingdom who would bathe her in all the riches in the world. But she was not into all of that. She wanted something real, and behind the makeup of the joker was what she was looking for.

I was upside down from the outside in

It takes someone special to see the joker through all his makeup, dress-up, and his jester act. And if someone does, they are quite special.

The song is filled with references to card decks and card games. Ed Sheeran does mention ‘Hearts’ and ‘Diamonds’ which are two of the four types of cards in the deck. King, Queen, and the Joker are three types of cards in a deck. ‘Folding’ is when a player gives up on his cards, usually in the game of Poker.
