Camila Cabello “Bam Bam” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

Right out the gate, Camila Cabello might be talking about her recent ex, Shawn Mendes.

You said you hated the ocean, but you’re surfin’ now

Soon after their breakup, Shawn Mendes was seen surfing. This comes as quite a surprise as he has been vocal about his fear of deep waters. It might just be that he is trying to conquer his own fears. Or it could be that he feels brand new since his breakup. Whichever it is, Camila uses this opportunity to say that he is not the person he used to be.

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes have been dating since 2019 until their breakup in November 2021. Camila was 21 and Shawn was 22 at the time. However, they first met each other long before that when they were just teenagers. But their goofy friendship turned into a fully-blossomed romance in the end.

They seemed like the perfect couple for a while. But, I guess, all good things have to come to an end. Although they had their whole life planned together, one slip-up can destroy years of brickwork taken to build up a castle.

Camila Cabello says that now she is ‘free’ again. The term ‘free’ is used loosely here. She is dancing with strangers and we all know that it is a dangerous dance. She knows her ex is probably out there dating again as well. Once they swore to be each other for their lifetime. But, things change, drastically.

In the chorus of the song, Camila Cabello sprinkles some Spanish over the song lyrics. “Así es la vida, sí” translated to English is “that’s life, yeah.”

Camile seems to accept the fact that life throws you curveballs no matter how careful you are. And sometimes you fail to face them successfully.

In the second verse of the song, Ed Sheeran takes on the ex-boyfriend’s role. He talks about a similar sentiment to that of Camila Cabello.

And on the surface, I held it together
But underneath, I sorta came unwound

Continuing with the ocean theme Camila began with, Ed Sheeran sings how he felt as if he was drowning all through last year. Camila and Shawn Mendes were locked up in quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic for the most part of their relationship. It’s difficult for us to say how this period of lockdown affected their relationship, but a lot of relationships did not make it through this time period. It was a good eye-opener for most couples.

However, the overall message of the song is getting over these tumulous times and moving on. They are both walking their separate paths now and seem to harbor no hatred towards each other. They were glad that it happened and glad that they had the courage to walk out.

Now Ed Sheeran is singing and playing his guitar on street corners in the rain and Camila Cabello is dancing naked in a public laundry surrounded by her friends. Life goes on!
