Selena Gomez – Cut You Off | Lyrics Review and Song Meaning

“Cut You Off” is the twelfth track on Selena Gomez’s 2020 album ‘Rare.’ Much like “Look At Her Now” and “Dance Again,” this song is also about moving on. But from whom? There might be clues!

Speaking for an interview with ELLE magazine, Selena Gomez got very specific about who this song is; “about cutting a man out of her life after 1,460 days.” This time period approximately equals to 4 years, a time similar to the relationship timeline between Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber.

According to Cosmopolitan magazine, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s dating timeline begins in December 2010 and ends in March 2018. Although this is approximately seven years, the two broke up many times in between. Hence the number of days of their true affair is relatively inconceivable.

The first verse of the song alludes to the above comment of the song. Selena sings that she is shedding extra weight after carrying it for ‘1,460’ days. How she kept count of the days is beyond our comprehension. But she is speaking about a very specific person from her life. And we know only of one boyfriend she dated for so long.

In the pre-chorus of the song, Selena Gomez blames herself for her own confusion. She could not figure out love vs whatever that was going on with this boy for 4 years. She imagined a “forever after” with him and it only lasted for four years. These lyrics are also a drunk confessional to herself.

This song acts as a mantra to chase the memories of this boy from her head. But the more she writes about him and performs this song on stage, the more she will be reminded of the same fact that she is trying to forget. It is a vicious cycle. But at least you will be making a few bucks in the (un)healing process.
