‘Me Before You’ Original Soundtrack is Good! (Album Review)

Jojo Moyes’ best-selling novel, “Me Before You”, has finally made it to the big screen and kicked off with an $18.3 million weekend debut. It is a tragic love story between two very different people. Louisa Clark, played by the Game of Thrones’ queen Emilia Clarke, is a quirky, secluded girl who has become very content in her simple, play-it-safe life. Will Traynor, played by the talented Sam Claflin, is a quadriplegic who used to live life to the fullest with his grand adventures. He has decided that he no longer wants to live due to the accident that doomed him to his wheelchair and has grown quite cynical and rude. Louisa is hired by Will’s mother to help care for and be a friend to Will. The two soon realize that they have a lot to learn from each other about life and love.

‘Me Before You’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Review

1. Numb – Max Jury

The opening track off the album is the first single released from Max Jury’s self-titled debut album. Max Jury is an up and coming artist with a soulful, gospel-like sound to his music. “Numb” is a “music for the soul” type of song that really sets the tone for the movie.

Little bluebird at my window
Sing a pretty song for me
Don’t you know that you can fly, fly, fly away
Don’t you know that you can leave

2. Happy With Me – HOLYCHILD

The second song on the album is much more up-beat and thrilling than it’s predecessor. “Happy With Me” is a sing-in-the-shower dance single from HOLYCHILD’s first EP, Mindspeak. Played during the time-lapse scenes where Louisa is spending day after day struggling to get on Will’s good side, this single is one of the only upbeat, pop songs we’re going to get in the movie but it fits perfectly.

Everyday do you notice that we’re never free?
Oh, why can’t you be happy with me?
Everyday we are running round trapped in our seat
Oh, why can’t you be happy with me?

3. Unsteady (Erich Lee Gravity Remix) – X Ambassadors

From the alternative rock band who brought us “Renagades”, we have an orchestral remix of the single, Unsteady, from the X Ambassadors’ debut album, VHS. The remix includes a 30 piece orchestra and takes the emotions of the film to a whole new level, perfectly embracing the relationship between Louisa and Will.

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
‘Cause I’m a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
‘Cause I’m a little unsteady
A little unsteady

4. Till The End – Jessie Ware

“Til The End” is a calming, soulful song. The song expresses the feelings of a couple headed in a path of destruction or hopelessness. When the whole world seems to be against them, they only have to look into each other’s eyes to make it all better-what could be more relating to ‘Me Before You’ story line?

When everything is crazy
You find a way to make it right
Yes, I love and I love and I love and I want you
It’s gonna be till the end of time

5. The Sound – The 1975

‘The Sound’ is taken from The 1975’s new album ‘I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it’. Despite the ridiculously long album name, the track is short and sweet. “The Sound” is different to all the tracks found in “Me Before You’ album. The cheerful beats and lyrics contrast from the usual moody theme of ‘Me Before You’ movie.

You’re so conceited
I said “I love you”
What does it matter if I lie to you?
I don’t regret it but I’m glad that we’re through
So don’t you tell me that you ‘just don’t get it’
Cause I know you do.

6. Surprise Yourself – Jack Garratt

Jack Garrat’s involvement in ‘Me Before You’ soundtrack is yet another out-of-the-world experience. The music is eerie and unique. The track is from Jack Garrat’s album ‘Phase’.

Take a pen and write this down
Draw something that can’t be found
And learn to walk again somehow
You know you might surprise yourself

7. Don’t Forget About Me – Cloves

This track is an amazing piece of vocal talent by Cloves and matches the mood of the movie perfectly. The high and low pitches the singer achieves resembles the ups and downs of the lives of Louisa Clark and Will Traynor. The heartfelt cry for her partner not to forget her is a truly touching masterpiece.

Where ever you’ve gone?
How, how, how?
I just need to know
That you won’t forget about me
Where ever you’ve gone?
How, how, how?
I just need to know
That you won’t forget about me

8. Photograph – Ed Sheeran

Taken from Ed Sheeran’s 2014 album ‘X’, “Photograph” is a musical heaven to dwell in for days. Ed Sheeran’s genius lyricism paints us a picture how after a breakup the photographs taken in the happy moments of their lives will remain forever. There’s no heartbreak in photographs-because no body captures a photo when they are fighting. So only good memories are stored in photographs.

We keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Our hearts were never broken
And time’s forever frozen, still

9. Not Today – Imagine Dragons

Another happy song from ‘Me Before You’ soundtrack. Ballad ‘Not Today’ by Imagine Dragons speaks about how love emerges victorious over all seemingly impossible barriers in life. It may not be today-but it must get easier some day because their love is true. This track perfectly matches with the theme of ‘Me Before You’ movie.

So this is our take on the highly vibrant ‘Me Before You’ original motion picture soundtrack. In conclusion we would have to say that the tracklist has been selected to perfection to match the mood and the theme of the movie.

If you love this soundtrack, buy the album and support the artists. Also make sure to comment your favorite track from the soundtrack.
