Shawn Mendes – In My Blood (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“In My Blood” is the only single from Shawn Mendes’ brand new self-titled album. The song was released on March 22nd, ahead of the album release on May 25th. The song is an emotional run through of the experiences in a dying relationship. In an interview with Billboard, Shawn explained what the lyrics of the song mean;

The concept of this song is about how it feels [when] you’re about to give up, and then you don’t. That’s the whole payoff in the chorus section…It’s not about when it happens. It’s kind of about something that I think everybody goes through and it’s something that I think people don’t talk about often, especially in music.

In light of this, we can deduce that “In My Blood” would not exclusively be about giving up on relationships.

Shawn also said that this song is the “closest to his heart” among all the songs he has written. Shawn Mendes was a part of the team who wrote the lyrics as well as the producers of the track.

Watch “In My Blood” Music Video by Shawn Mendes

In the entire music video for “In My Blood,” Shawn Mendes is laying on the floor and his surroundings are continuously changing.

In the first few verses of the song, we see bits and pieces of cement blocks falling all around Shawn, possibly representing his inner turmoils. Then comes snow and rain, which are both not very pleasant experiences. Lastly comes the sunlight and in the puddle of water he lays on, a new life begins to grow. Vines and flowers would generally represent life and new beginnings. So, from start to end, the video shows how Shawn is making peace within himself-rather a process of healing and rediscovering.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “In My Blood”

Intro

Education, relationships, and life, in general, are designed to remind you of the impermanence of everything. Sometimes they all come crashing down and we feel trapped and helpless. But, luckily, it is not in Shawn’s nature to give up. So, he keeps on fighting through the bushes and the thorns. More damage to himself, but in the end, he will reach the garden.

Verse 1

These lines go on to show that even superstars like Shawn Mendes go through the same set of human emotions like all of us. Shawn admits that he feels overwhelmed and insecure at times. And the solutions he gets? “Have a drink.” “Take her home tonight.” But he is questioning, does it ever stop completely? Or does he have to keep on drinking and keep on having one night stands!

Pre-chorus

Shawn explains how anxiety feels and it does not sound pretty. Feeling trapped, the walls seem to crash on him, difficult to breathe, no medicine to help and the skin-crawling inside. Pray that nobody has to ever feel that!

Verse 2

In the second verse of “In My Blood,” Shawn is talking about being insecure about his relationship. Being afraid of the next words out of her mouth, being scared of the next text message he gets, being depressed about being all alone again, it does not seem to be a pleasant experience at all.

The inspiration for “In My Blood” has been drawn from Shawn’s personal experiences, and hence the song holds a special place in his heart.

This is a rather simple song with simple lyrics but tells a powerful story about what every person goes through at some point in their lives. It is quite brave of Shawn Mendes to bare his soul to the public like this. Only a very few have the courage to do so.
