The Lil Peep and ILoveMakonnen collaboration “Sunlight On Your Skin” was destined not to be released after the sudden and unexpected passing of Gustav Elijah Åhr AKA Lil Peep in November 2017. He was just 21 years old at the time of passing due to a drug overdose. The collaborator on the song, ILoveMakonnen, later revealed that he has the blessings of Lil Peep’s camp for the release of this single.
Last week, ILoveMakonnen released yet another version of “Sunlight On Your Skin.” Titled “Falling Down,” this track included the hooks by Lil Peep mixed with verses and dialogues by another late artist XXXTentacion. X recorded his own verses over the original after the passing of Lil Peep. X passed away in June 2018. Releasing this version, ILoveMakonnen confirmed that both artists’ camps were okay with the release.
The song speaks about a failing relationship where one party is trying to make it work and the other has already abandoned ship.

The artists are saying that the couple would rather spend rainy days together than sunny days apart. This is also a reflection that the couple would spend their bad and good days together. ‘Rain’ signifies gloom and darkness. ‘Sun’ signifies brightness and happiness. If the girl has the radiant glow of the Sun when the guy is not around, it spells disaster for the relationship. She is happier without him. But he is not ready to move on.
He loathes for her company but she does not feel the same way. The artists also speak about how lovers say they are meant to be together, but rarely show any affection towards each other. There should not be anything to be proven by either party if they are truly in love.
‘Skin to skin’ does not have to be a sexual relationship. The mere touch of your partner is enough to keep the love ablaze. The guy feels as if she wants him around as well. However, there is little action from her side to prove it. He holds on-probably to a burning wire. He is torturing himself, but he is more scared of the reality, which is that she is already moving on.
“Sunlight On Your Skin” is a sad melancholy of two beautiful voices. It is a shame that such young talents are taken away from the world and community. Rest in peace Peep and X!
