Billie Eilish – hostage (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

Billie Eilish’s streak of impressive songs continues with the “hostage” single. The song is featured in Billie’s 2017 debut album ‘don’t smile at me – EP.’ This album really put Eilish on the spotlight and her latest works such as “Six Feet Under,” “when the party’s over” and “you should see me in a crown” tracks released more recently.

In “hostage,” Billie Eilish professes about her love-how strong it is and how entrapping it is. Even singing about love, Billie Eilish manages to hold true to her whole persona of horror and dark. Her love is like taking her boyfriend ‘hostage.’ Creepy or amazing? You decide.

As usual, “hostage” is written and produced by Billie Eilish and her brother FINNEAS. The music video released in November 2018, is produced by Henry Scholfield. The last screen of the video reminds us of the ghostly character Alma from the video game F.E.A.R.

The song takes a mellow melody to match the horror antics of the song and lyrics. The video shows Billie Eilish and her lover doing an eerily synchronized love-dance in a room that comes to life on and off.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “hostage”

Verse 1

Keeping true to the dark and sinister theme of the song, Billie Eilish talks about stealing the guy’s heart and keeping it locked in a chest. Conceptual, of course, but she makes it sound literal. She also says that she prefers to be alone. But she wants to be alone with him. She asks if she makes sense. We can predict she would make sense if the lover was dead or if he was truly a hostage without a will as shown in the last scene of the video.

Verse 2

Billie Eilish loves the feeling of her boyfriend’s kiss on her neck. But she is baffled. Does she prefer this new feeling over her lonely company? However, she deters that this new feeling feels right to her.

Chorus

These lyrics of “hostage” seems to be something taken out from an alien movie.

Billie Eilish speaks of nesting inside the veins of her boyfriend. Veins carry blood around your body. Simply, her wish is to be the lifeblood that controls and keeps him alive. “I’ll build a wall,” says Billie Eilish in the next sentence. If this is to be tied up with the previous line, this could cause a massive coronary attack.

‘Ball and chains’ were used in medieval times to restrain a prisoner. However, her intent is not to treat him this way. Her intentions are pure. She just wants to have him all the time and all to herself-like a hostage.

Verse 3

‘Gold on your fingertips’ could be a reference to how Billie Eilish feels at the touch of his fingertips-especially when she says those fingertips serenade her cheek.

‘Gold leaf’ is a popular cigarette brand and looks as if he is a smoker. She wants him to kiss her until she is at a loss of words.

Verse 4

Billie talks about her passionate moments with him, which end up with his clothes on her.

All of a sudden the golden feeling she was experiencing turns into hurt as she realizes that real love hurts. She is torn between the golden-fake feeling vs the bliss of her loneliness. We can assume that she resorted to a middle ground. As we see in the video, the boyfriend is fully trapped in a web and Billie glares at him from a distance.

Billie Eilish’s love extends to a whole other level. Are you into it? Let us know your thoughts on “hostage” and Billie Eilish in the comments below.
